Court Usher

Brook Street Recruitment is currently recruiting for a Court Usher to join the team at Derby Courts. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a fast-paced court environment, supporting the smooth running of hearings and providing excellent customer service to court users and stakeholders.

Role Details

  • Location: Derby
  • Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week
  • Working Pattern: Monday to Friday
  • Contract: Initial contract until September 2026
  • Pay Rate: £12.86 - £13.25 per hour
  • Start Date: ASAP

About the Role

As a Court Usher, you will play a key role in ensuring the efficient operation of court proceedings. You will work closely with the judiciary, court staff, legal professionals, jurors, witnesses, and members of the public, providing support and guidance throughout the court process.

This role requires excellent communication skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to remain professional and organised in a busy environment.

Key Responsibilities

Court and Reception Duties

  • Welcome and assist court users, including judiciary, jurors, solicitors, barristers, police officers, and external agencies.
  • Provide information relating to court proceedings and hearing arrangements.
  • Escort court users throughout the building as required.
  • Administer oaths and support court proceedings.
  • Call parties into courtrooms and hearing rooms in priority order.
  • Liaise with Court Clerks, Legal Advisers, and the Witness Service to ensure smooth hearing operations.
  • Answer face-to-face enquiries and provide excellent customer service.
  • Keep court users informed of any changes to hearing times or courtroom locations.

Customer Service and Administrative Support

  • Prepare for, facilitate, and process a variety of court hearings.
  • Respond to enquiries via face-to-face interaction, telephone, and written correspondence.
  • Support court users with a range of needs by providing clear, accurate, and consistent information.
  • Use HMCTS guidance, service scripts, and knowledge resources to direct users to appropriate services.
  • Handle complaints in line with established policies and procedures.
  • Identify and escalate building or operational risks to the Senior Person on Site (SPoS) where required.

Operational Support

  • Process casework in accordance with standard operating procedures and service standards.
  • Maintain accurate records and case files, ensuring compliance with data protection and retention requirements.
  • Support jury service administration, including attendance tracking, deferrals, reassignments, and expense processing.
  • Assist with court listings and scheduling to maximise judicial efficiency.
  • Provide administrative support to members of the judiciary where required.
  • Support enforcement activities, including financial assessments and fine collection processes.
  • Produce basic statistical and financial reports.
  • Contribute to health and safety activities, including facility checks, issue logging, and emergency planning arrangements.

  • Experience in an administrative, customer-facing, or public service environment is desirable.
