TB Clinical Nurse Specialist Closing Date: 30 July 2026 Job Summary
The post holder will promote excellence in nursing practice through the integration of expert clinical practice, education, consultancy, acting as a specialist resource/role model and commit to nursing research and audit. They will evaluate through quality assurance initiatives and assessment of clinical outcomes. The post holder will ensure the maintenance of clinical excellence with an awareness of local and national TB policies and guidelines. They will provide specialist clinical leadership within this area of TB care and will lead and develop specialist education. The post holder will act as a specialist role model in TB and case manage a cohort of patients (including children) and their families/carers and undertake nurse led clinics. They will also manage adults with both TB and the Human immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The post holder will deputize for their line manager in the management of their clinical TB specialty. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in a variety of settings. The post holder will ensure the maintenance of clinical excellence with an awareness of local and national TB policies and guidelines. They will provide specialist clinical leadership within this area of TB care and will lead and develop specialist education. Main Duties of the Job
The post holder will assist in the delivery of high quality Tuberculosis (TB) nursing services (which are accessible and responsive) throughout the Trust at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital/West Middlesex and for the Royal Brompton Hospital to minimise and reduce the impact of Tuberculosis (TB). It is an integrated service that cares for TB patients as inpatients, outpatients and in the community. The post is cross site working however a base site will be allocated. The post holder will be working alongside other clinical colleagues to provide expert individualised care, treatment and support for this patient group and their families/carers independently in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team in line with local and national targets. They will play a key role within this team in order to ensure a seamless, co-ordinated and timely approach to care. - Perform comprehensive individualised and holistic assessment of patient health needs that are evidence based.
- Plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs.
- Perform advanced clinical skills in assessment &/or diagnosis &/or treatment.
- To be competent in administering tuberculin skin testing and BCG vaccinations to both adults and children. Perform visual acuity testing.
- Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care and development of services
- Monitor investigation results, initiating further assessment/review of treatment pathway as required. Monitor and manage patients whilst on treatment, explaining treatment goals and managing side effects.
- Identifying barriers to adherence for TB patients and ensuring appropriate measures are in place to ensure that patients complete TB treatment successfully e.g. Directly Observed therapy/Virtual Observed therapy (DOT/VOT).
- Work as a case manager for a cohort of patients (adults and children) and their families.
- Manage a caseload of cases including complex cases requiring enhanced case management to ensure high treatment completion rates.
- Work autonomously but collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
- Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to on-going care needs and discharge arrangements.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives, and professionals across health and social services and within TB services.
- Contribute to the health promotion and education for TB patients and their relatives within the local health economy.
- Provide expert advice, education, and social/psychological support to patients with TB disease. Work collaboratively and co-operatively with clinical colleagues to develop services and quality of care delivered.
- Co-ordinate and implement management of nurse led clinics and domiciliary visits to adults and children.
- To provide sound clinical leadership and develop support mechanisms for sharing good practice within the clinical setting and Trust wide.
- Demonstrate role model excellence in nursing practice to other staff and act as an expert TB resource within the trust across inpatient, outpatient and community settings.
- Co-ordinate and contribute to complex case conferences and incident meetings.
- Facilitate the discharge of patients appropriately and assist in preventing admissions as clinically appropriately.
- To case manage a non-tuberculosis mycobacterium caseload.
- To provide professional leadership and management to nursing staff.
- Deputise for the Lead TB Clinical Nurse Specialist (line manager).
- Liaise with Public Health England with regard the epidemiology of Tuberculosis and the management of specific cases.
- To act as a role model in promoting equality of opportunity among staff in line with the Trusts Equality and Diversity Policy as well as conducting equality impact assessments on policy and/or service changes.
- To ensure local TB policies/protocols and guidelines are developed and reviewed to reflect best practice and that staff are informed of changes and work within these.
- To lead the review and re-design of patient pathways and services to ensure that these meet the changing needs of patients while optimising resources.
