Job Description

Join AECOM’s Adelaide Building Engineering team and work on some of Australia’s most complex and highly regulated engineering projects. As a Mechanical Handling Equipment Engineer, you’ll be involved in the design and delivery of cranes, hoists, lifting equipment and other mechanical handling systems supporting major nuclear and defence infrastructure. You’ll work closely with multidisciplinary teams and have the opportunity to contribute across the full project lifecycle, from concept and design through to procurement, commissioning and operational readiness.

This role is based in Adelaide. Relocation packages are available for suitably qualified candidates.

How you’ll make a difference:

• Lead the design and engineering of mechanical handling systems, including cranes, hoists, lifting devices and associated equipment, ensuring designs meet project, operational and regulatory requirements.
• Develop and review technical specifications, calculations, design documentation and equipment schedules across concept, preliminary and detailed design phases.
• Work closely with structural, civil, electrical, controls, process and building services teams to integrate mechanical handling systems into complex facilities.
• Undertake optioneering, load path and heavy-lift assessments, constructability reviews and risk assessments to support design development and project decisions.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to engineers and designers, supporting a strong focus on safety, quality and technical delivery.
• Support safety cases, engineering justifications, procurement activities, vendor reviews and technical bid evaluations for safety-significant equipment.
• Support technical reviews, testing, inspection, commissioning and acceptance activities, including working with suppliers and project teams to ensure equipment meets the required performance and operational standards.
• Contribute to the development of reliability, maintainability, inspection and lifecycle requirements for critical lifting assets, while supporting project scope, programme and delivery objectives.

The qualities that will help you thrive:

• A degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent

  qualifications

  and experience.
• Proven experience delivering crane, lifting or mechanical handling systems on major infrastructure, industrial, defence, energy, marine, nuclear or other highly regulated projects.
• Experience in the nuclear industry, particularly nuclear defence, or a strong background in another highly regulated environment.
• Experience developing engineering documentation through concept, preliminary and detailed design, with an understanding of safety, risk and regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrated technical leadership and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams, including structural, civil, electrical, controls, process and facility operations.
• Strong understanding of mechanical handling equipment, lifting systems, load paths and operational interfaces. Experience with overhead and gantry cranes, specialised lifting systems, crane runway systems, heavy lifts or remote handling will be highly regarded.
• Knowledge of safety-significant or safety-classified equipment, nuclear safety culture, hazard analysis, ALARP principles, reliability and lifecycle requirements, and design for inspection, testing and maintenance.
• Experience with requirements and configuration management, systems engineering, verification and validation, vendor management, equipment procurement, factory acceptance testing, commissioning and operational readiness will be highly regarded. CPEng/Chartered status, or a commitment to achieving professional registration, is desirable.

The ability to meet relevant defence / AUKUS clearance is required.
