Introduction
Some young people need qualifications. Others need confidence, independence and the skills to navigate everyday life.
Our Achieve Lifeskills programme is designed for young people aged 16–24 with EHCPs who need support developing the practical, personal and emotional skills that help them move towards adulthood. From managing money and maintaining wellbeing to building confidence and preparing for future opportunities, the programme helps young people develop the skills that make everyday life feel more possible.
We're looking for an Achieve Lifeskills Tutor to join our Reading team. This role combines the delivery of Functional Skills English and Maths with supporting learners on the Achieve programme to develop confidence, independence and preparation for adulthood skills. Whilst the Lead Tutor takes responsibility for much of the Achieve curriculum, you'll play a key role in helping learners make progress in Functional Skills and apply those skills in meaningful, real-life contexts.
Many of the learners on the programme have SEND and SEMH needs, so we're looking for someone who can build positive relationships, maintain high expectations and adapt learning to meet individual needs. You'll need to be confident teaching, tracking progress and helping learners overcome barriers to learning whilst creating an environment where they feel safe enough to take part.
Above all, we're looking for somebody who understands that success can look different for every learner and who enjoys helping young people achieve things they didn't think were possible.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills English and Maths sessions at Entry Level and Level 1.
Support learners to develop confidence and competence in literacy and numeracy through practical and meaningful learning activities.
Contribute to the delivery of the Achieve Lifeskills programme, supporting learners to develop independence, confidence and preparation for adulthood skills.
Adapt learning activities and resources to meet individual learner needs, interests and EHCP outcomes.
Build positive relationships that encourage confidence, participation and engagement.
Support learners with emotional regulation, confidence building and personal development.
Track learner progress, maintain accurate records and contribute to target setting and review processes.
Work collaboratively with the Lead Tutor, Learning Support Assistants and wider colleagues to ensure learners receive consistent support.
Participate in learner reviews, EHCP discussions and progression planning.
Contribute to a safe, structured and positive learning environment aligned with NMT's Loving Care Approach
You Will Have
GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent).
Experience working directly with young people in a learner-facing role, either one-to-one or in small groups.
Experience supporting learners with SEMH needs.
Confidence teaching English and Maths and supporting learners to achieve Functional Skills outcomes.
Experience planning and delivering structured learning sessions.
The ability to build strong rapport and positive relationships with young people.
A calm, patient and encouraging approach.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Strong organisational skills and the ability to maintain accurate learner records.
Basic IT skills, including Microsoft 365.
A genuine belief in the potential of young people who may have struggled in mainstream education.
Desirable:
Experience working with learners who have SEND or EHCPs.
Experience as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Youth Worker, Mentor or similar role.
Experience teaching Functional Skills English and Maths.
Experience contributing to life skills, personal development or employability programmes.
A recognised teaching qualification or willingness to work towards one.
A full UK driving license
About Us
New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are a post 16 training and education provider dedicated to helping young people aged 16–25 discover their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living.
This academic year New Meaning Training has over 320 young people from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire. Many of these learners are referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units, and Special Education Needs settings.
Our journey began in 2015 with the opening of our first centre in High Wycombe, originally known as “Toolshed.” Ten years on, NMT continues to grow. In Berkshire we’re fortunate enough to have expanded into a second building in Reading to create a quieter space for Creative Art & Design, Achieve Lifeskills and Transition learners. And in our main building we have Construction Multiskills , Sports and Boost Workskills . All incorporate functional skills qualifications in Maths and English, along with tutorials and enrichment sessions to support our well-rounded approach. We also provide a ‘Transition Support’ programme for young people with EHCPs who are not yet ready for a learning setting.
NMT tailors its programmes to meet the needs of its learners, considering Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We comprehensively apply the principles of a Loving Care Approach (Trauma Informed Practice) to ensure all young people receive the support they need to thrive.
