Caterham School is seeking an exceptional Assistant Director of Sport to help drive, innovate, and deliver our dynamic physical education and sporting programme. Working alongside the Director of Sport, you will play a pivotal role in the organisational delivery of an outstanding coaching programme, inspiring pupils of all abilities to achieve their potential, and fostering a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and lifelong enjoyment of sport. If you possess outstanding leadership qualities, elite coaching capability, and a passion for holistic pupil development, we invite you to play an integral part in leading our sporting legacy into its next chapter.
Our sporting aim
Caterham aims to cultivate a vibrant sporting culture where every pupil thrives—balancing broad participation with elite excellence to foster a lifelong love of physical activity.
Sport is an essential part of the educational process, built on the belief that engaging in physical activity allows every individual to realise their full potential, both on the sports field and in the classroom. Commitment, Leadership, Wellbeing, Innovation and Sportsmanship are the core pillars of our programme, allowing all pupils to experience success in addition to developing well rounded sportspeople.
The Programme
Caterham's sports provision is structured around three key areas:
PE: Our curriculum PE syllabus gives all pupils opportunities to achieve success, regardless of athletic ability. It teaches the benefits of a physically active lifestyle while building foundational academic knowledge for those wishing to pursue GCSE and A-Level PE.
Games: Each year group has one dedicated games afternoon per week. Years 7–9 focus on our main sports, while pupils in Year 10 and above enjoy an expanded range of options.
Turnouts: These after-school practices allow coaches to work with teams to foster team spirit and prepare them for Saturday fixtures.
Our main sports are:
Cricket
Hockey
Lacrosse
Netball
Rugby
Swimming
In addition to our main sports, we also provide competitive opportunities in a number of additional sports such as Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Table Tennis and Tennis.
To further supplement our main timetable, our extensive co-curricular programme offers countless opportunities to try alternative sports—such as water polo, synchronised swimming, mountain biking etc.—as well as targeted skills clubs like lacrosse stickwork, netball shooting, hockey drag-flicking, and indoor cricket nets.

A Balanced, Inclusive, Multi-Sport Approach
At Caterham, we champion a multi-sport model , encouraging pupils to play as many different sports as possible for as long as possible. This approach fosters transferable skills, prevents burnout, and shapes well-rounded, balanced individuals.

Regular inter-House competitions further promote positive sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership. Whilst we often achieve competitive success on the field, our focus is always on providing a fun, inclusive environment for players to develop and we are proud of our inclusive ethos. We offer a varied and wide-ranging programme that provides a huge level of participation in sport across the entire school, ensuring every pupil finds an activity they enjoy, thrives in and continues to take part in beyond school.
