The People's Tree freelance opportunities

Helix Arts and George King Architects are proud winners of the National Trust's Sycamore Gap wood commission.

Helix Arts is putting together a creative team to deliver The People’s Tree - an ambitious collaborative project combining public participation, sound, architecture and storytelling to respond to the loss of the much‑loved Sycamore Gap tree.

We are seeking artist-makers, craftspeople and storycatchers based in the North-East and Cumbria to facilitate workshops in schools and diverse community settings along Hadrian’s Wall.

The artists will respond to themes of the tree, seeds, hope and nature and will co-produce high quality creative work with the community.

• Freelance, based on £175 per half day inclusive of expenses and VAT.
• A materials budget and recording equipment will be provided, as well as access to the Sycamore Gap wood as appropriate to the role.
• Minimum of 20 half days delivery to be worked between October 2026 and March 2027.
• The successful applicant will be subject to the Enhanced DBS, must hold or obtain public liability insurance for a minimum of £5 million, and ensure equipment is insured against loss or damages from fire, theft and other usual risks for the duration of the contract.
• The successful applicant must have the ability to travel across the country for workshops which will include hard to reach rural areas.
