Sefton Suite is a 16 bedded surgical ward, we are looking for caring and compassionate individuals to join our friendly nursing team in the Liverpool University Foundation Hospitals NHS Trust, Aintree Site.

If you are an RN or newly qualified Nurse with current experience on a Surgical Ward and are passionate about providing the highest standards of care to patients and if nothing but the best will do we want to hear from you. You will be working as part of an experienced and supportive multi-disciplinary team.

Job responsibilities

• Participate in maintaining a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for all patients and carers and maintain highest standards of nursing care.
• Determine nursing priorities and plan patient care. Inform the nurse in charge when changes in circumstances may affect patient care.
• Maintain nursing records in accordance with the NMC standards and Trust guidelines.
• Maintain and improve quality of patient care through contribution to the development of Essence of Care and clinical benchmarking within the unit.
• Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients.
• Provide information and support to patients and carers, and ensure all those involved in the care are aware of changes in the patient's condition.
• Assist in the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs.
• Develop the clinical knowledge and skills to care for acutely ill patients admitted via both planned and unplanned routes.
• Undertake expanded practice, under supervision, in order to optimise patient care and in accordance with ward/department and Trust policies.
• Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of care.
• Ensure effective lines of communication within the ward/department multidisciplinary team.
• Ensure that all equipment is checked and maintained in safe working order.
• Manage allocated workload and provide supervision of less experienced staff.
• Practise and promote safe and efficient use of all resources.
• Report all incidents, accidents and complaints to the unit manager and complete Trust incident forms in accordance with risk management policies.
• Ensure compliance with Trust policies and procedures, and own standards in relation to clinical governance.
• Provide leadership in the monitoring of standards of care.
• Act as shift coordinator in rotation with other nurses in the team.
• Provide cover for and undertake duties of absent colleagues as necessary.

Essential criteria

• Registered Nurse, current NMC registration
• BSc in Nursing (Diploma in Nursing as a minimum)
• Recent clinical nursing experience as a student or as a registered nurse
• Sound clinical nursing knowledge and a good understanding of nursing issues and clinical governance
• Ability to organise workload and delegate tasks appropriately; ability to work as part of a team; ability to support less experienced staff; ability to problem solve
• Good written and verbal communication skills; basic IT skills, including e-mail and word processing

Desirable criteria

• Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor Training
• Post registration qualification in relevant specialty
• Experience within relevant clinical setting
• Evidence of maintaining a clinical learning environment
• Evidence of working with learners
