Lead Lung Screening Nurse

Job summary
The Lung Cancer Screening Programme commences in the Trust in October 2026. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Registered Nurse to assist in developing the programme and leading the clinical team to provide excellent care of the participants. The successful candidate will require compassionate communication skills and have experience in a senior role at Band 6 or above.

This is a senior nursing position within the Trust which will combine clinical, educational and audit, and managerial skills in order to support the lung cancer screening programme within HDFT.

The Lung Cancer Screening programme will enable the early detection of lung cancer in order to save lives by detecting lung cancer at an early stage and offering curative treatment. The position holder will provide support to patients, families and staff caring for them. They will function as a resource and advocate for the speciality. In collaboration with a multi professional team they will influence patient care ensuring patients receive the highest standard of clinical care and access to the full resources of the multiprofessional team in Hospital and community settings.

Main duties of the job
To be the link between the screening programme and the clinical teams, until the patient is incorporated into the clinical service. Primarily for patients with an abnormal CT chest result but also for other incidental findings under agreed protocol.

To co-ordinate onward referral for patients as appropriate onto a cancer pathway or other specialist service if required.

To attend the weekly Screening Review Meetings, present and discuss abnormal results. To take responsibility for ensuring all agreed actions are completed.

Identify the specific educational needs of those at risk of lung cancer and their carers so that they are empowered to manage their condition and seek appropriate help and advice.

To be known as a resource and provide clinical support throughout the Trust.

To provide information, expert nursing advice and emotional practical support to patients with lung cancer and other incidental findings in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

To manage own workload, maintain accurate records and statistics as required.

Allocating regular time slots for non-clinical work.

Demonstrate as an expert practitioner interdisciplinary team working skills, enabling the improvement of holistic patient care with the Trust.

• oRecognised teaching qualification.
• oMaster's level degree or equivalent experience

Desirable

• oCPD / Specialist course in Respiratory to at least degree level

Experience

• oExperience of multi-professional working

Desirable

• oSignificant experience in a senior position,
• oRecent experience in an oncology setting.
• oExperience in the broad range of treatment modality settings for lung cancer.
