JOB SUMMARY

Location: Paignton, Onsite

Employment Type: Permanent/Full Time

Coherent is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to help develop high-performance, high-reliability pump laser modules used in optical communications systems and fibre-optic network infrastructure. You'll take products from concept through to volume manufacturing, working at the intersection of precision mechanics, optoelectronics, and advanced packaging.

What You'll Do

• Design mechanical assemblies and packaging solutions for fibre-coupled pump laser modules.
• Build and maintain 3D CAD models and detailed mechanical drawings.
• Perform tolerance analysis to ensure manufacturability and long-term coupling stability.
• Develop parts, fixtures, and jigs to support prototype assembly and characterisation.
• Create thermal and stress models to de-risk designs and guide development.
• Carry out lab-based optical testing to validate models and product performance.
• Participate in design reviews, failure analysis, and root-cause investigations.
• Maintain engineering documentation including drawings, specifications, BOMs, and ECOs.

What You'll Bring

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Experience designing precision or optoelectronic products.
• Strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks preferred).
• Familiarity with FEA for thermal and stress modelling.
• Understanding of tolerance analysis and precision mechanical design.

Bonus Skills

• Experience with laser diode packaging or fibre-coupled laser modules.
• Knowledge of telecom reliability standards (e.g., Telcordia GR-468).
• Exposure to high-volume manufacturing environments.
