Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist- Oncology

Job summary
Due to internal movement our supportive team requires a Specialist SLT to support patients during their oncology and radiotherapy treatment at QEHB. This includes outpatient and inpatient input including pre-treatment, on-treatment and post-treatment provision alongside a highly specialist MDT.

You will benefit from a robust supervision structure alongside innovation, participation in research and clinical/professional development being encouraged. You would be part of a well-established team which benefits from SLT led FNE clinic, SLT led FEES and Videofluoroscopy, vocal cord medialisation, botox and professional voice users services. Opportunities to be part of and access these instrumental assessments to help to shape your clinical practice would also be available.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate would work within the acute oncology Speech and Language Therapy team at QEHB serving a diverse clinical caseload. You would work closely with the SLT Team Leaders, NQP Speech and Language Therapists and peer Specialist Speech and Language Therapy to provide an excellent level of care to our patient group.

The successful candidate will have a clear passion in assessing and managing dysphagia and communication difficulties relating to the oncology and radiotherapy caseload. Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
  • assessing and managing patients with swallowing and communication disorders during their oncology and/or radiotherapy treatment
  • service development and audit
  • working closely with the MDT
  • training of junior colleagues and students
  • working towards utilising specialist assessments such e.g. FEES, SVR, videofluoroscopy
  • working flexibly and thriving in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications
Essential
  • Professional knowledge acquired at degree level in Speech and language therapy
  • Postgraduate training/short courses relevant to working with adults with acquired communication/swallowing difficulties.
  • Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  • Current registration with HCPC.
  • Completed RCSLT Level C/ EDS Level 5 dysphagia competencies (or above).
  • Completed RCSLT NQP competencies.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable
  • Advanced competencies such as tracheostomy, FEES, SVR or video fluoroscopy.
Experience
Essential
  • Experience of working within an adult inpatient setting.
  • Experience of working independently with adult dysphagia caseload.
  • Experience of working successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience working with the speciality caseload.
  • Experience of holding own clinical caseload.
Desirable
  • Membership of a relevant Clinical Excellence Network (CEN).
  • Experience supervising or training junior colleagues.
  • Experience of working within the NHS.
Additional Criteria
Essential
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of dysphagia, dysarthria, dyspraxia and dysphonia and dysphasia.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of treatment and management of patients with a range of acute and/or long-term progressive conditions.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive and complex information effectively.
  • An awareness of the appropriate use of counselling skills.
  • Excellent skills of persuasion, motivation, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills with people who have significant and complex communication and or swallowing difficulties.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability and passion to be involved with service development.
  • Ability and passion to support and supervise junior members of the team.

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.

  • Ability to work weekends as part of a 7 day working pattern (when appropriate service delivery allows and commences).
