Head of Religious Studies

Part-time, Full-time

Contract Type: Part time, approx. 60% FTE

Salary: A competitive salary will be offered commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Closing Date: Tuesday 25 August 2026 (12 noon)

This role is for an experienced Religious Studies teacher to lead teaching across Key Stages 3–5, line-manage a small department and contribute as a form tutor on a 60% timetable. There is a clear route to increase hours by delivering HPQ/EPQ and/or coordinating the ECT programme.

About this role / why this role matters

You will ensure high-quality RS teaching across the school, shape curriculum and assessment for GCSE and A level, and support pupils' spiritual and ethical development within Luckley House School's Christian context. The post is part-time (c.60% FTE) with scope to expand through additional responsibilities, making it suitable for someone seeking leadership without a full-time commitment immediately.

What you'll be doing

  • Teach RS across KS3, GCSE (AQA A: Christianity and Islam) and A level (Edexcel: Philosophy of Religion, Ethics, Christianity).

  • Lead the RS department: curriculum planning, assessment, reporting, quality assurance and line-managing department staff.

  • Set and mark work in line with school policy; use assessment to inform teaching and track pupil progress.

  • Work with SEN and support staff to meet diverse learner needs; ensure differentiation and inclusion.

  • Act as a Form Tutor: oversee attendance, behaviour, progress monitoring and parent communication for your tutees.

  • Contribute to extra-curricular life: trips, enrichment activities and lunchtime clubs as appropriate.

  • Support professional development in the department, including mentoring NQTs/ECTs if required.

  • Maintain professional standards: participate in appraisal, CPD and whole-school duties as required.

What we're looking for

Essential

  • A good honours degree in a relevant subject and PGCE or equivalent leading to QTS.

  • Proven experience teaching RS across KS3–5, including A level.

  • Experience leading departmental administration (curriculum planning, assessment and quality assurance).

  • Strong classroom practice with the ability to engage pupils of differing abilities.

  • Ability to act as a Form Tutor and contribute to pastoral care and reporting.

  • Commitment to safeguarding children and to equality, diversity and inclusion.

  • Empathy with the Christian ethos of the School.

Desirable

  • Experience of leading HPQ and/or EPQ delivery.

  • Experience coordinating an Early Career Teacher (ECT) programme.

  • Coaching experience in Netball and/or Hockey.

  • Experience of working in a boarding school or with boarders.

About the team or department

Religious Studies is popular at Luckley House. RS is taught weekly to all KS3 pupils, offered as a full-course GCSE and as an established A level. The department values academic rigour alongside discussion, ethical reflection and trips; you will join a small, supportive team where leadership can shape curriculum and enrichment.

What we offer

  • A part-time leadership role with scope to increase hours through additional responsibilities (HPQ/EPQ, ECT coordination).

  • A close-knit school community on a 20-acre campus with a strong co-curricular programme in music, drama, sport and the arts.

  • A personalised academic environment where pupils are known individually and examination outcomes are consistently above national averages.

  • Opportunities for professional development, mentoring others and contributing to school life beyond the classroom.

  • Competitive salary, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

  • Start date: January 2027 or February half-term 2027.
