Research Educator

Job summary
The post holder will be a proactive role model and senior member of the Research & Innovation Workforce Development & Wellbeing Team, who supports on practice development, training programmes and the professional development of the wider research delivery staff.

The post holder will support the research workforce across NUH to ensure the successful delivery of the Research & Innovation Workforce Development Strategy/Plan. Working in a supportive role, the post holder will coordinate, deliver, promote, establish and facilitate the delivery of the research training, education & development objectives whilst providing educational direction, advice and support to the Clinical Research Practitioner (CRP) Workforce. The post holder will foster a learning culture which values high quality research participant/patient care in accordance with evidence-based practice and ICH-GCP. The postholder will have Clinical Research Practitioner experience and the AHCS registration required to lead, shape and support the CRP workforce as an educator.

Main duties of the job
  • Being a proactive role model and clinical research leader within the Research & Innovation Workforce Development & Wellbeing Team, leading on the development and support of excellence in the practice learning environment for students, learners and newly qualified research practitioners at NUH.
  • The post holder will have specific responsibility for ensuring the provision of CRP developmental training
  • Sharing of best practice examples and provide support for students, assessors and supervisors and practice placement areas who are managing learners where there are performance concerns or issues identified.
  • Developing and supporting supervisors, assessors and preceptors to adhere to the Trust and national guidelines giving appropriate guidance where required
  • Facilitate and update clinical & non-clinical research and educational programmes
  • Facilitate and deliver research staff and student induction and drop-in sessions under the supervision of the Training and Education leads and work closely and in collaboration with HEI partners.
  • Working in collaboration with clinical research teams, staff educators to adhere to and implement the NUH Trust's guidelines on preceptorship, pre-registration nurses and clinical supervision for nurses, midwives, nursing associates, health care assistants, and Clinical Research Practitioners to ensure a supportive and positive learning environment.

Job responsibilities
1. Clinical and Leadership Responsibilities
  • 1.1 Be responsible for managing and updating the Trust supervisor, assessor and Preceptor database to ensure staff meet regulatory requirements and are trained to deliver the highest standard of supervision and preceptorship support to students, learners, return to practice staff
  • 1.2 To monitor and review strategies for the identification of clinical research placement capacity, working with senior teams in Care Groups to identify areas where this could be increased, without impact on quality, to ensure placement provision for commissioned learners
  • 1.3 To act as a visible resource of support and advice for assessors, supervisors and managers in practice, specifically in relation to cases where there are concerns relating to learner or assessor/ supervisor competence and capability.
  • 1.4 Involved in Individual Learner Reviews and supportive action planning
  • 1.5 Maximise available resources to support the Workforce Development & Wellbeing Team across all areas.
  • 1.6 Promote, by own example, effective multidisciplinary team working.
  • 1.7 Share good practice and innovation with colleagues across the service to enhance the quality of the learning environment.
  • 1.8 To proactively participate in clinical supervision as a supervisee and as a supervisor for ongoing professional development and to provide support for pre-registration students.
  • 1.9 Comply with all Trust policies and risk assessments with particular regard to the policies and procedures carried out in the event of maintaining staff and patient safety.
2. Research and Development
  • 2.1. Promote and practice evidence-based care & ICH-GCP at all times.
  • 2.2. Promote professional practice in line with relevant research.
3. Communication and Relationships
  • 3.1 Collate information evaluating CRP learning activity and capacity to ensure effectiveness of data collection/ pathway management as required.
  • 3.2 Develop and maintain links with the higher education providers to influence curriculum developments, support recruitment and the implementation of the curriculum in CRP Clinical Practice.
  • 3.3 Communicate and engage with students prior to applying to NUH and throughout the recruitment process and develop and sustain effective communication with newly qualified staff employed within the trust.
4. Management Responsibilities
  • 4.1 To contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to CRPs, clinical supervision and continuing professional development.
  • 4.2 Support the Training & Education Leads in research staff educational needs in planning and maintaining accurate records and a process for managing requests for student placements including Open University students, overseas students, return to practice and elective demands in the most efficient and safe manner in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • 4.3 Assist with the motivation and development of the Research & Innovation Workforce Development & Wellbeing team. Participate in the identification of individuals personal and development needs through performance reviews and competency assessment as required, supported and guided by Research & Innovation Workforce Development & Wellbeing Team
  • 4.4 Work as an integral member of the team to develop appropriate strategies and support at point of transition from student to newly qualified staff at NUH
  • 4.5 To represent NUH at key CRP National meetings as required and agreed with the Research & Innovation Workforce Development & Wellbeing Team, ensuring effective communication and partnership working between NUH, HEIs and other stakeholders as agreed with line manager.
  • 4.6 Develop effective working relationships with all key partners and stakeholders across NUH and externally to ensure two way feedback, communication and partnership working.
  • 4.7 Participate in the selection and appointment of students and newly qualified staff as required
5. Professional Responsibilities
  • 5.1 To proactively participate in clinical supervision as a supervisee and as a supervisor for ongoing professional development and to provide support for staff.
  • 5.2 Identify personal training and development needs to ensure continuing professional development.
  • 5.3 To work as part of the Research & Innovation Workforce Development & Wellbeing Team supporting colleagues with other priorities as guided by the Research & Innovation Workforce Development & Wellbeing Lead
6. Education Responsibilities
  • 6.1 Successfully demonstrate the skills and knowledge acting as a competent CRP
  • 6.2 Be responsible for keeping up to date with legislation, Trust policies and procedures and National policy relating to practice learning health and social care education, to ensure CRP pathways are of a high standard.
  • 6.3 To be conversant with the Trusts training and development policies and procedures and demonstrate a sound working knowledge of the practical implications and applications of these to managers.
  • 6.4 To actively participate in practice placement audits and provide support for practice areas as required to review and implement action plans
  • 6.5 Work with research staff leads, monitoring and evaluating the quality of practice placements, including analysing learner evaluations. Create and provide reports as required.
  • 6.6 Contribute to the development of Trust internal policies, practices and procedures as relevant to role.
  • 6.7 Support research team leaders and research educators to maintain a positive learning environment for all staff and learners.
  • 6.8 Work with the Research & Innovation Workforce Development & Wellbeing Team to develop induction and educational programmes for students, new members of staff, the research workforce as required. Ensure they dovetail with the preceptorship needs of staff and clinical research risk priorities. Support delivery and practical coordination of the Trust professional induction programme for staff

Essential
  • Professional Registration in Clinical Research Practice with The Academy of Healthcare Science
  • Relevant post-basic study e.g. clinical research competencies

Experience
