Help shape Tamworth’s journey to net zero

Tamworth Borough Council is on an ambitious journey to make its operations Net Zero Carbon by 2050 — with a strong aspiration to get there by 2030, if financially achievable.

We are embedding climate action and sustainability into the way we work, the decisions we make and the partnerships we build. From strengthening our own approach to working closely with partners such as Staffordshire County Council, we are committed to making real, measurable progress.

This is a high-profile and influential role at the heart of that work. As Sustainability Officer, you will help turn ambition into action, supporting the delivery of projects that reduce carbon, improve environmental performance and move the Council closer to net zero. You will play a key role in shaping and driving our sustainability action plan, working with colleagues, service leads and external partners to identify opportunities, develop projects and monitor the benefits achieved. A major part of the role will be helping to identify and pursue funding opportunities to support ongoing decarbonisation projects.

Net zero is one of the Council’s most important transformative corporate priorities — and this post offers the right person a genuine opportunity to make a visible and lasting impact. We are looking for someone motivated, enthusiastic and highly organised, with strong written, analytical and numeracy skills. You will be educated to degree level or have equivalent relevant experience, and be confident analysing data, preparing reports and briefings, contributing to and leading topic groups, and managing projects from idea to delivery.

You will be a natural communicator who can build positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels. You will bring experience of delivering or project managing environmental and climate change projects, along with the confidence to solve problems, work under pressure and manage competing priorities.

Most importantly, you will share our passion for protecting the environment and reducing the impacts of climate change on people, communities and natural places. If you want a role where your work matters — for the Council, for the borough and for the planet — this is an exciting opportunity to make your mark while progressing your career.

Why join Tamworth Borough Council?

At Tamworth Borough Council, you will be part of a forward-looking organisation with a clear vision for Building a Better Tamworth. We are ambitious for our borough, committed to working with communities and partners, and focused on delivering practical change that improves local places, services and lives. You will join a supportive council where your ideas, expertise and energy can help shape a greener, healthier and more sustainable future for Tamworth.

Before you apply

Please read the essential criteria below carefully. You must clearly evidence in your application how you meet each requirement. Applications that do not demonstrate the essential criteria will not be progressed to shortlisting.

  • Experience of working in a relevant field of sustainability, preferably climate change or carbon reduction.
  • Project management experience, including evidence of managing projects from inception through to delivery.
  • Experience of carbon accounting, including scopes, boundaries and data governance.
  • Experience of working in local government or a comparable organisation.
  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification or experience.
  • Knowledge of climate change legislation and policy.

This is a home working contract and the majority of duties will be carried out at home, however, employees will be contractually required to attend site on two days per month for team meetings, 121 meetings, etc. Employees may also be required to attend a site for meetings, collaborative work or to undertake work related activities. Site attendance will constitute no more than 40% of working time and includes the contractual 2 days per month.

In return, the Council offers an excellent employment package, including flexible working, a non-contributory health scheme, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme and generous holiday entitlement.

Appointment will be subject to satisfactory references, right to work in the UK check and medical clearance.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Anna Miller (Assistant Director - Planning, Regeneration and Economic Development) via ***email_hidden***.
