Job ID: 41658
Location: Bristol : One Temple Quay
Position Category: Technical Engineer
Position Type: Employee Regular
Senior Specialist – Naval
Lloyd’s Register
Location: Bristol, UK.
What we’re looking for
To assess complex problems for internal / external naval clients where the parameters are not well defined and to determine solutions where previous experience does not provide any precedent.
Job Overview :
The Lloyd's Register Naval Centre of Expertise (NCoE) in Bristol provides a unique and essential service to Shipyards, Navies and LR colleagues worldwide, supporting the growth, development and delivery of the global LR Naval Business.
As a part of the NCoE, the Projects Team provides a technical consultancy service that supports the development, selection and application of standards and certification of naval vessels, particularly during the acquisition stages, for Naval Authorities, but also Shipyards, Designers and Acquisition Teams.
Within the UK, the NCoE is actively engaged in frameworks which provide support to the MoD through the Naval Design Partnering (NDP) and Engineering Design Partnering (EDP) contracts – these are focused on providing effective and responsive support to the MoD, particularly in the area of standards management and standards development, but also in the delivery of specialist engineering and core certification services.
Locally, and globally, the Projects Team provides high-quality and valued support to Navies, Shipyards and local LR Offices engaged in the procurement, construction and delivery of naval assets to Lloyd's Class. In particular, we have commenced engagement with a number of stakeholders on the future Hybrid Navy projects and will support these, and others, through to contract award and commencement over the next few years. This provides an opportunity to help shape and support critical decision-making processes early in the procurement cycle.
This role within the Projects Team will have responsibility for the management and delivery of complex and challenging tasks using a mix of skills and resources from within the candidates own skill set and capability but also from across the Lloyd’s Register Group or from within Industry Partners.
There is an increasing demand on the team to support the rapid development of the LR naval business; these opportunities will not always require standard classification solutions and the ability to combine and construct service offerings to suit the specific customer requirements will require innovative thinking and problem solving. It is expected that the candidate will contribute to this work and support the development and delivery of these tasks.
The candidate would also be expected to contribute to the work being done within the team, which includes support to the International Naval Safety Association (INSA), and the LR Naval Ship Technical Committee (NSTC), but also work being done on naval safety cases, and in the emerging area of autonomous vessel assurance. Where market requirements are identified the role will allow for similar opportunities to be identified and developed in the future in line with the candidates experience and interests.
The NCOE Projects Team provides a unique opportunity to develop and deliver service offerings to a range of naval stakeholders and has a reputation for doing so in an effective and efficient manner. The selected candidate will become part of a small team with a respected reputation for developing and delivering practical solutions to complex naval problems.
What we offer you
- The opportunity to work for an organization that has a clear sense of purpose, is guided by values and helps colleagues to develop professionally and personally through our range of people development programmes
- Fulltime position
The role

- To coordinate internal and external resources to provide a timely and accurate technical service to the client and/or LR colleagues on complex defence projects.
- To ensure all work is carried out in accordance with agreed requirements, standard project management methods, process and procedural control and financial monitoring.
- To undertake local secondments where required to support client technical design and support activities.
- To develop relationships with, and income from, specialist areas of the naval community such as the NATG, Project Teams or local designers, particularly in the concept and design phases.
- To assess/recommend the time/value of the work to be undertaken for a client within an agreed cost structure and agreed commercial constraints.
- To represent LR at appropriate technical committee forums and working groups.
- To mentor / coach other technical employees to ensure effective technical knowledge transfer and application.
- To pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness.
What you bring
- Must hold or be eligible to achieve UK SC security clearance.
- A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards)
- To work in accordance with professional codes of conduct and the LR Code of Ethics
- Previous experience of verification processes, product and rule development and project management with experience of delivering technical services and products within defined budgets and timescales.
- To be able to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology.
- To be able to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to analyse and solve engineering problems.
- To provide technical and commercial leadership within the responsibilities assigned.
- To demonstrate effective interpersonal skills including communication in English at all levels
