Consultant - Palliative Care Medicine

Summary:

The Consultant - Palliative Care Medicine plays a pivotal role in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals facing serious, life-limiting illnesses. This position is integral to the health care team, focusing on improving quality of life through comprehensive symptom management, advanced care planning, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Consultant will lead the development and implementation of palliative care strategies across inpatient, outpatient, and home-based settings, ensuring alignment with clinical guidelines and patient values. With 5+ years of experience in palliative care medicine, the ideal candidate will bring clinical expertise, emotional intelligence, and a commitment to holistic care. This role is essential in bridging gaps between medical treatment and patient dignity, supporting both patients and families during complex health journeys. The Consultant will also contribute to education, research, and quality improvement initiatives, helping to advance the standard of palliative care within the organization.

Responsibilities:

- Provide expert clinical assessment and management of complex symptoms including pain, dyspnea, nausea, fatigue, and psychological distress. 

- Lead interdisciplinary palliative care team meetings, collaborating with physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other health professionals. 

- Develop individualized palliative care plans in partnership with patients, families, and primary care providers. 

- Facilitate difficult conversations around prognosis, goals of care, advance care planning, and end-of-life decisions with sensitivity and cultural awareness. 

- Serve as a clinical educator and mentor for residents, fellows, medical students, and multidisciplinary team members. 

- Participate in quality improvement projects and clinical research initiatives to enhance palliative care delivery and outcomes. 

- Provide consultation services across hospital units, outpatient clinics, and community-based settings as needed. 

- Contribute to the development and refinement of palliative care protocols, policies, and care pathways. 

- Engage in continuous professional development and maintain certification in palliative care medicine.

Requirements: 

- Board certification in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or a related specialty with additional certification or fellowship training in Palliative Care Medicine. 

- Minimum of 5+ years of clinical experience in palliative care, including direct patient care in diverse settings (inpatient, outpatient, home care). 

- Demonstrated expertise in symptom management, ethical decision-making, and end-of-life care. 

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage patients and families during emotionally challenging situations. 

- Proven ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams and lead collaborative care initiatives. 

- Experience in teaching, mentoring, or clinical supervision is highly desirable. 

- Proficiency in electronic health records and clinical documentation systems. 

- Commitment to ongoing learning and adherence to professional standards and ethical guidelines.
