Role Overview

A supportive secondary school in Birkenhead is seeking an approachable, motivated, and highly organized Attendance Officer to join their student support team ASAP. In this key role, you will take daily responsibility for monitoring student attendance and punctuality, identifying attendance trends, and implementing proactive strategies to improve overall attendance. Working closely with pastoral staff, the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), and external agencies, you will build positive partnerships with parents and carers to eliminate barriers to regular school attendance.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee morning registration systems, execute first-day absence contacting, and maintain precise attendance records on school management systems (e.g., SIMS, Arbor).

• Track individual student absence data to identify early patterns of truancy or persistent absence.

• Convene formal attendance meetings with families, conduct home visits, and set up attendance improvement plans.

• Liaise with local authority Education Welfare Officers (EWOs) and external support services on legal compliance and statutory interventions.

• Produce accurate attendance reports and analysis for the Senior Leadership Team and Governing Body.

Key Requirements

• Experience working in an attendance, administrative, or pastoral capacity within a school or educational setting.

• Proficiency in school management software (SIMS, Arbor, or equivalent) and standard office software applications.

• Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to maintain a firm yet empathetic approach with parents and students.

• Clear understanding of statutory school attendance guidelines, safeguarding standards, and local authority protocols.

• Full UK driving license and access to a car for home visits (preferred).

• Legal right to work in the UK.
