Facilities Assistant - Progressive Secondary School in...
Start Date: September 2026
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Paid to scale (Support Staff Framework)
The Role
A progressive Secondary School in Swindon is seeking a professional, proactive, and exceptionally organised Facilities Assistant to join their busy estates and support team. This is a brilliant opportunity for a practical individual with a background in basic building maintenance, logistics, or commercial caretaking to take on a key support role managing school operations and campus readiness in Wiltshire.
The successful candidate will work alongside the Site Manager to maintain the safety, security, and day-to-day functionality of the school campus. Your core responsibilities will include executing first-line building repairs (such as minor plumbing adjustments, basic carpentry fixes, and paint touch-ups), maintaining a spotless physical environment, and monitoring site deliveries. You will also take operational responsibility for the daily setup of assembly halls, examination spaces, and community letting venues, as well as updating facilities requests and asset logs via the school’s digital management portal.
You will maintain an approachable, professional presence on-site, serving as a primary link with teaching staff, students, and external visitors. Outstanding time management and a proactive approach to safety are essential, as you will balance urgent repair requests with regular statutory checks, including emergency lighting logs and fire door integrity audits.
School Information
This is an 11 to 18 well-established School in Swindon with an outstanding reputation for academic growth, community service, and support staff welfare. The campus features modernised classroom blocks, dedicated technical learning hubs, and newly built sports facilities.
The premises and support team are highly integrated and respected members of the school family. Staff benefit from a welcoming, collaborative working culture, a dedicated onsite premises workshop, and fully funded paths for continuous technical and safety training (including working at heights, COSHH awareness, and manual handling certifications).
Requirements
Proven practical experience in building maintenance, caretaking, or a physical trade discipline
Strong hands-on competency in general maintenance tasks (minor DIY, carpentry, basic plumbing repairs)
Clear understanding of basic health and safety protocols, manual handling, and safe chemical usage (COSHH)
Basic IT literacy, with absolute confidence checking digital work tickets and updating tracking logs
Ability to work flexibly to meet the operational demands of a busy, active school site
