Our company is looking for a Commercial Underwriter to join our team.


  • Support the Credit Risk Manager and Operations Manager when required;
  • Assist and coach colleagues with technical and procedural aspects of underwriting;
  • Supply underwriting and administration support as required;
  • Investigating credit queries and passing them to customer services for follow up;
  • Produce timely and accurate documentation;
  • Actively encourage generation of profitable new business;
  • Underwrite existing business profitability, accurately and in line with established Underwriting practice;
  • Promote the business through a polite, helpful and willing attitude to all customers and colleagues;
  • Analysing financial and customer data;
  • Reviewing credit applications from Limited Companies and Sole Traders for finance up to £150,000;
  • Complying with all regulatory and internal system controls;
  • Maintain and develop business relationships with intermediaries.


  • Excellent IT skills and be able to work with numerous inhouse systems and in a paperless environment;
  • Strong analytical and technical underwriting experience;
  • Be team focused;
  • Have evidence of building and maintaining strong working relationships;
  • Excellent sale / negotiation skills and excellent time management;
  • Excellent risk assessment and risk management experience;
  • Cert CII Qualification with DIP CII desirable;
  • You will have strong market knowledge and be aware of trading issues;
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the commercial insurance market;
  • Commercial Underwriting experience is essential;
  • Experience of working in a targeted environment, be self-motivated and have proven sales / negotiation skills;
  • Offering a genuinely responsive service to our brokers across our distribution channels & be able to work at speed when work flow dictates;
  • Stay in sync with underwriting authority & quickly learn & apply the companies risk attitude & underwriting culture.
