Our company is looking for a Senior Animal Technician to join our team.

Responsibilities:

  • Blood sampling and dissections;
  • Understand, adhere to, monitor and enforce site and personnel movement restrictions, animal barrier regulations and biosecurity procedures;
  • Clinical assessment of disease and dissection;
  • Maintain accurate record keeping in electronic and traditional formats as required under ASPA;
  • Work within defined Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs) with a keen eye for detail;
  • Mentoring, training, development and support of technical staff, including apprentices;
  • Contribute to the rota for weekend and bank holiday cover;
  • Deputise for the NACWO as required;
  • Provide accurate and timely presentation of reports and information to line manager and customers;
  • Maintenance of breeding colonies and accurate record keeping of breeding programmes;
  • Additional laboratory techniques as required;
  • Breeding of both inbred and outbred animals, including transgenic lines;
  • Competently conduct experimental and surgical procedures as required;
  • Contribute to the weekend and out of hours work on a rota basis;
  • Keep up to date with developments in animal technology; recommend and develop novel procedures as required.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience in a supervisory role;
  • IAT Level 3 Diploma in Laboratory Animal Science, or equivalent qualifications and experience;
  • Experience administering substances by a variety of routes such as intranasal, intragastric, intraperitoneal, intravenous, topical and intramuscular;
  • Previous training experience is advantageous;
  • Hold Home Office Licence modules 1-3 are essential, module 4 is desirable;
  • Ability to conduct a wide range of regulated procedures to a high standard;
  • Knowledge of monitoring animal research studies and able to proactively address any welfare concerns with senior research colleagues;
  • Hold a Home Office Personal Licence;
  • An understanding of the Animals Scientific Procedures Act 1986 and Home Office guidelines relating to the production and use of animals;
  • Supervisory experience is essential;
  • Familiarity and expertise with Excel, Word, Outlook, Cedric Database or similar software;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with team members and to customers;
  • Experience of blood sampling and dissection of small rodents;
  • Flexibility and willingness to work in any animal area with any laboratory animal species;
  • Experience working with laboratory animals.
