Graphics Editor Job Description Template
Our company is looking for a Graphics Editor to join our team.
Responsibilities:
- Pitch and create enterprise and breaking news visuals for all platforms;
- Support any other on-the-ground needs for staff, including schedules and vacation;
- Direct, assign, and support three graphics reporters with visual, technical and editorial guidance, inspiring them to do their best work;
- Work with reporters and editors to shape ideas into visual story opportunities;
- Stay abreast, and ahead of, new storytelling trends and techniques;
- Create and shape new workflows and processes in a fast-paced, global, and cross-platform newsroom;
- Support the growth of the visual department by recruiting talented visual journalists;
- Review visual pitches and use judgment and expertise to decide which should become visual assignments;
- Edit visual stories;
- Work closely with the Visual Editor to assign and produce work.
Requirements:
- Demonstrable experience leading a team successfully;
- Able to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines;
- Able to train reporters and editors to learn new skills that will contribute to their visual storytelling;
- A creative vision and willing to share and collaborate on new ideas;
- A minimum of three years of experience in a newsroom, ideally 4-6 years;
- Strong cartography skills are a bonus;
- Expertise with charting and other data visualization techniques;
- Able to prioritize best opportunities for visual stories using judgment and strategic acumen;
- Excellent visual skills, including demonstrable design knowledge, such as layout, typography, color, interaction design, and fluency with Adobe tools;
- Experience with data journalism and associated tools, such as Excel, or R;
- Able to schedule and run effective meetings in person or remotely;
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and its libraries, especially D3;
- Knowledge of responsive design, and the technical nuances of the digital landscape.
