‘One Click Better’: How a Small Tweak Drove a 16% Jump in Active Subscribers

‘One Click Better’: How a Small Tweak Drove a 16% Jump in Active Subscribers
Date: 13 August 2025

Jooble is an online platform that brings together job adverts from a wide range of industries and sectors, connecting them with people actively looking for work. We earn revenue when job seekers engage with the listings — whether that’s by clicking through, reading full job details, or submitting an application.

Visitors to our website see a mix of paid and free job postings. The free listings don’t generate direct income, but they play a vital role in growing our pool of email subscribers — an important driver of repeat visits.

Anyone browsing these free vacancies can choose to receive alerts for similar roles. We offer this through pop-up prompts, which appear when a user opens a job advert or starts the application process. The following sections explore how we tested and refined these pop-ups to improve results.

The Challenge: Mapping the Jooble User Journey

On Jooble, a typical user’s path can be split into three main steps:

  1. Attraction – bringing people to the site
  2. Engagement – browsing vacancies and interacting with listings
  3. Activation – signing up for regular job alerts

Once someone subscribes, they join our email audience — a channel that’s central to our growth strategy. This is why we invest heavily in fine-tuning this stage.

A large share of sign-ups comes from our free job description pages. These dedicated pages showcase the full details of each role, including the job description, requirements, and application process. From here, users can apply directly or opt in to receive alerts for similar opportunities.

Job seekers can sign up for alerts through three different touchpoints:

  • First-visit pop-up – appears as soon as the vacancy page loads, inviting them to subscribe.

  • Application-stage pop-up – shown when they begin the application process, featuring a prompt to subscribe alongside suggestions for other relevant roles.

  • End-of-page form – placed below the recommended vacancies section for those who scroll to the bottom.

The ‘One Click Better’ Approach

We wanted to make the subscription process for our job alerts smoother and more appealing. After nearly two decades in operation, Jooble has a tried-and-tested product with many processes already performing at a high level. That meant sweeping changes to the user journey were unlikely to be the best option.

Instead, we chose to look for marginal gains within the system we already have. The idea came from a point made by product expert Lenny Rachitsky on his podcast: don’t rush into big overhauls — find ways to make the experience one click better. In other words, pinpoint the biggest sources of friction and refine those. Small, targeted adjustments can deliver big results over time.

With this mindset, we began searching for areas in our sign-up flow where we could remove unnecessary steps and make the process faster.

Our Hypothesis: Remove the Roadblocks

Guided by the ‘one click better’ principle, we examined our subscription funnel to see where people were dropping off. We looked closely at how users engaged with our pop-ups — especially the moments they closed them without subscribing.

It quickly became clear what might be holding them back: unnecessary effort. We believed that introducing one-click sign-up options could cut out these extra steps, making it simpler for users to join and, in turn, boosting both subscription rates and the number of new accounts created.

The Experiment: Small Tweaks, Strong Results

We ran an A/B test with two variations:

  • Group 1 – added a ‘Subscribe with Google’ option, letting users sign up instantly without having to type in their email address or complete a full registration form.
  • Group 2 – adjusted the first pop-up by removing the ‘Skip’ button, leaving only the small ‘X’ in the corner for closing it.

Engagement with the initial pop-up — the one shown as soon as the page loads — rose sharply, with average usage up by 40%. In other words, many more visitors interacted with it instead of closing it straight away.

Results That Exceeded Expectations

The impact was significant:

  • New accounts increased by 5.72%
  • Verified accounts rose by 5.02%

We review test outcomes on a country-by-country basis, and in some markets the uplift was even more striking — with verified new accounts climbing by as much as 16%. One clear factor was that many users disliked entering their email manually. Offering a one-click sign-up removed that hurdle and sharply reduced the number of people abandoning the process.

The standout performer was Group 2, where we removed the ‘Skip’ option from the first pop-up. The roughly 40% jump in engagement with this pop-up played a major role in the rise in verified accounts. Looking back, the change feels obvious — but it made the journey smoother, letting users move quickly to the content they wanted without extra friction.

Key Takeaways from the Experiment

  • Minor adjustments can have a major payoff – A 5% rise in verified accounts across the whole platform is a big win at our scale. The effect held steady for months, showing that the change genuinely made subscribing easier.
  • Optimise what you already have – Don’t overlook simple, even obvious tweaks. The smallest refinements can often deliver the biggest improvements.
  • Local context matters – Cultural and language differences in each market can directly influence user behaviour. A fix that works in one country might be even more powerful in another.

What made this test stand out was its simplicity. We didn’t redesign our systems or build complicated new features. We simply pinpointed the friction and removed it — and the results spoke for themselves.
