BBC’s flagship current affairs debate programme, Question Time , is looking for a new Researcher .
The successful candidate will be part of a small editorial unit delivering the country’s most high-profile discussion programme.
The Question Time editorial team is based in Glasgow.
Role responsibilities
- The job involves researching and approaching potential guests; writing clear and accurate briefs, often under acute time pressure; communicating effectively with the presenter, editor and other team members; confidently communicating with the audience and with panellists; and staying calm under pressure.
- You will research prospective panellists and issues.
- You will write clear and concise briefs for our presenter and programme producers.
- You will know where to find reliable information and how to analyse data.
- You will be able to demonstrate tenacity, the ability to develop contacts, and the skills and art of persuasion.
- On programme day you will meet and greet panellists, who are often high-profile individuals; liaise with the social media team; provide briefing notes up to the last minute; and fact-check while the show is filmed in front of a live studio audience.
Are you the right candidate?
- This is a Glasgow based role so only apply if you are already based in Scotland or are willing to relocate.
- This could be your first TV role if you have a background in other forms of news journalism.
- You must be confident picking up the phone to cold call agents, special advisers and others.
- You will have a passionate interest in ideas, current affairs and politics - especially UK politics - and have an inherent sense of how politics connects to people’s lives.
- You will have an interest in life beyond politics, and the people and stories that shape our culture. You will love discussion and debate.
- We want ideas for new panellists from the world beyond our political institutions: such as business, arts, education, entertainment, sport.
- You’d be an important contributor to daily life on Question Time , discussing stories and debating potential panellists.
- Clear communication and establishing good working relationships are essential, but beyond all else, we want energy and enthusiasm. Ours is a team game.
- You should be aware of the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines, especially around politics, fairness, and accuracy. You will have a fundamental desire for impartiality and diversity of thought.
- At Mentorn we value diversity and actively encourage applicants from a wide range of underrepresented groups.
- An understanding and enthusiasm for how Question Time can enhance and improve its social media offering is a significant bonus in this role.
More about the role
- There is a lot of travel in this role - you’ll be travelling to and from location on Thursdays, Fridays and sometimes Wednesdays, for up to forty weeks of the year.
- We’re offering a fixed-term contract starting around 31st August 2026 and ending towards end of June 2027.
