Summary
The Southampton Engineering Training Association (SETA) is supporting Murray Technical Services Limited to recruit a Level 3 Engineering Fitter (electrical) Apprentice to join their Engineering team, develop within the organisation and train in all aspects of control systems.

£16,640 to £26,436.80, depending on your age
National Minimum Wage
There is a possibility of a wage increases, this will be based on annual performance reviews. There will be also be opportunities to work overtime during the week & weekend. This will be rate x1.5 & x2 on a Sunday.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at Murray Tech and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff. The apprenticeship tasks/focus will be around training in all aspects of control systems as well as gaining extensive knowledge of engineering materials.
Apprentices will be working as part of the team, working to complete the requirements of the Fitter Standard. To ensure you gain the experience you will:
- Gain an understanding of General Arrangement & Schematic Drawings
- Gain an understanding of components and how they operate
- Laying out / fitting out back plates and doors
- Wiring control panels
- Get an understanding of pump / motor starting and control applications; DOL, ASD, Soft Start, VFD
- Carrying out point to point checks
- Carry out torque checks
- Get involved in the functionality and testing with a Test Engineer
- Installing cable containment on site
- Installing SWA Power supply, control & instrument cabling
- Glanding & termination of cables
- Installing field Junction Boxes / Isolators, Emergency Stops & Support Frames
- Installation of level equipment & support frames
- Installation of lighting systems
- Setting up field instrument devices
- BS7671 Testing

What you'll learn
Course contents- Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
- Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
- Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
- Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
- Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
- Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
- Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
- Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
- Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
- Reporting work outcomes or issues.
- Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
- Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
- Operating within limits of responsibility.
- Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Training schedule
Apprentices will undertake a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard programme. This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA’s Apprenticeship Centre in Southampton.
You will also begin a knowledge qualification (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week over two academic years.
After your initial training at SETA, you will be with your employer working on developing your skills; ultimately leading to your End Point Assessment.
SETA will make regular visits during this period of time to ensure you will covering all the required aspects of the Standard, which includes a practical element, a theory test and a professional discussion, regarding the work achieved with your employer.
These final tests are administered by an independent assessment organisation and take place in the last three months of the apprenticeship.

Other requirements
We mainly work within the Water & Data Industry. As well as working within the workshop you will also be working on customers sites. Due to space constraints, parking at SETA is not available for apprentices who drive, instead you will be required to find alternative parking locally. There will be also be opportunities to work overtime during the week & weekend. This will be rate x1.5 & x2 on a Sunday.
