PR Manager

About the role

You will be responsible for delivering our consumer PR strategy, based out of either our Liverpool or London office. You will play a key role in shaping how millions of customers, partners and stakeholders experience our brand – from our reputation in the media to the way we communicate our purpose and value. As the leader for consumer public relations, you will lead and inspire your team to champion our ambition of transforming our reputation in PR as a style destination amongst the media, influencers and tastemakers.

Key Responsibilities

Create, lead and execute our Consumer PR strategy: 

  • Lead the media relations, press strategy and proactive storytelling around our products and partnerships. 
  • Work hand in hand with our social & influencers team to identify key ambassadors to tell the Matalan story 
  • Align and work closely with the corporate PR team to manage the process for corporate announcements including store openings.

Strategic planning:

  • Develop and a execute a PR strategy that elevates Matalan’s position as a leading value fashion retailer. 
  • Build process working closely with our product teams to bring a consistent flow of product relevant to media to ensure we are part of the cultural conversation 
  • Work closely with our corporate PR team to help shape and articulate our corporate narrative, showcasing our commitment to affordability, inclusivity and responsible sourcing and retailing. 
  • Support the Senior manager in being a trusted advisor to the executive team, providing guidance on media engagement on thought leadership for consumer PR. 
  • Oversee the strategy and execution of experiential marketing initiatives, ensuring brand activations, event and in-store experiences enhance customer engagement and strengthen our brand position. 
  • Conceptualise and execute high impact press events

Team Development:

  • Lead and inspire your team, fostering a culture of creativity, agility, and accountability.
  • Ensure your team works closely and in full collaboration with the wider social and influencers team
  • Own, manage and optimise budgets, agency relationships, and performance metrics to deliver ROI-driven brand marketing while maintaining cost efficiency. 

Innovation and Continuous Improvement:

  • Work cross-functionally with the wider brand and digital teams to spot opportunities and scale content that is resonating with customers 
  • Have a ‘ear to the ground’ on identifying key cultural moments that Matalan should engage with and have a POV on

About You

  • Previous experience operating at a manager level within PR, communications or media relations ideally within retail, consumer or fashion industries. 
  • Strong track record of building high-impact PR strategies  
  • Excellent media relations skills with established journalist and influencer networks across fashion, retail and business press. 
  • Proven ability to manage high-profile announcements, sensitive issues and crises. 
  • Strong storytelling ability with sharp copywriting and narrative development skills. 
  • Confident working with senior leaders and influencing at executive level. 
  • Experience in management with the ability to inspire, motivate and grow a team.
