Support Worker (North Somerset Temporary Accommodation)
£25,878 per annum + benefits
Weston-super-Mare | Hybrid: office and community
Full Time | Permanent | 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday)
Your Patience. Their Path. Real Change.
What makes a good support worker isn't necessarily what's on their CV.
It's the patience to keep showing up for someone who's had every reason to stop trusting professionals. The willingness to sit with a difficult conversation rather than rush past it. The instinct to challenge a system that's failing someone, rather than shrug and say that's just how it is. The quiet belief that people can change their own lives — and the steadiness to keep believing it on the days they can't.
If those things sound like you, the rest can be learned.
You'll join a small, settled team of support workers working across five sites of temporary accommodation in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset. Most have come through homelessness, often with histories of addiction or mental health challenges. Your job isn't to fix any of that. It's to help them build the skills, confidence and connections they'll need to manage their own tenancy when they move on.
This is independence-focused work. Not driving someone to the shops every week, but walking the route with them once so they know where to go. Not solving the system for them, but standing alongside them while they learn how to navigate it themselves.
What you'll be doing
Holding a caseload of around 10 customers, each with their own goals, plan and pace
Spending a full day at each of our five sites in turn, picking up planned 1:1s and the ad-hoc conversations that happen when customers know you're in the building
Building support plans, risk assessments and reviews that genuinely reflect what each person needs
Signposting and connecting people with the right specialist services — addiction support, mental health teams, employment, training, benefits advice
Helping people prepare for life in their own tenancy – from practical skills like budgeting and managing a home, to navigating the bidding process for housing
Working closely with the local community and neighbours, so our sites stay welcome and welcoming
Contributing to safeguarding, tenancy management and the steady running of each site
Sharing what you learn with the rest of the team, so we keep getting better at what we do
More about you
This role is hired on values and mindset, not background. Some of our best support workers have come from social care, mental health or drug and alcohol services. Others have brought lived experience of homelessness or recovery. Others still have come from psychology, social work or related studies, looking for a meaningful first step into the field. All of those routes are welcome here.
What we're really looking for:
Genuine empathy and the patience to build trust with people who've often had reason not to trust professionals
The ability to hold steady when situations are difficult, frustrating or slow to shift
A practical, problem-solving mindset — willing to challenge the system on a customer's behalf rather than shrug when it's stuck
Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain professional boundaries while building real rapport
Good IT skills and the ability to keep accurate, up-to-date records
A team player who can work independently across sites but values being part of something collective
This role requires an enhanced DBS check, which we'll arrange when you start.
What you'll get in return
Beyond a salary of £25,878 and the chance to do work that genuinely changes lives, you'll get:
26 days annual leave per year (plus bank holidays) rising to 29 days after 3 years
Your birthday off as an extra holiday
Up to 10% matched pension contribution and 6x salary life assurance
Annual bonus scheme
Flexible benefits which might include a Health Cash Plan, cycle to work, gym membership, holiday trading and high street discounts
Access to an Employee Assistance Programme for your own wellbeing
