Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse - AMU/MAU and SDEC

Job summary
We are seeking enthusiastic, compassionate and motivated Band 6 Sisters/Charge Nurses to join the Acute Medicine team at Good Hope Hospital.

Acute Medicine comprises an integrated Same Day Emergency Care and Medical Assessment service (SDEC/MAU), alongside a 34-bedded Acute Medical Unit (AMU) with an additional 12 single-room cubicles (MAU Zone 2).

As a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse, you will provide clinical leadership and operational coordination across Acute Medicine, supporting patient flow, managing deteriorating patients, ensuring high standards of care, and developing junior staff. You will be expected to lead the SDEC/MAU assessment area, coordinating timely assessment, treatment and discharge planning while maintaining patient flow across the service.

We are looking for registered nurses with at least two years' acute care experience who are passionate about leadership, service improvement and delivering high-quality patient-centred care. Leadership and development opportunities will be provided to support your ongoing professional growth.

Main duties of the job
  • Regularly take charge of AMU, SDEC/MAU or a designated clinical area.
  • Provide clinical and operational leadership, including in the absence of senior nursing staff.
  • Coordinate patient assessments, admissions, transfers, discharges and patient flow.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based patient care.
  • Support the management of deteriorating patients and provide expert clinical guidance.
  • Lead quality improvement, audit, governance, patient safety and risk management initiatives.
  • Support, supervise and develop nursing staff, students and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Promote a positive learning environment, staff wellbeing and professional development.
  • Act as a visible clinical leader, fostering teamwork, professionalism and compassionate care.
  • Support the achievement of ward, divisional and organisational objectives.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Essential: Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC register
  • Desirable: Health care management / leadership qualification
Experience
  • Essential: Substantial post registration experience working in a complex health care setting / Acute NHS care setting supervising / mentoring junior staff
  • Essential: Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD
  • Essential: Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment
  • Essential: Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
  • Essential: Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff
  • Essential: Experience of mentoring undergraduate students
  • Essential: Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department
  • Essential: Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice.
