LOCATION: The farm is situated near Smallfield which has good general facilities. The town of Horley is nearby with a choice of primary schools, village shops and facilities. The larger, popular town of Crawley is about 8 miles away with secondary schools and colleges and a huge selection of shops and amenities.
THE FARM: The unit is part of a large farming operation, approximately 850 cows in three herds, on units that are fairly close together. The farms are all well-equipped and very well maintained and mostly self-contained for all field work, forage production/harvest and muck/dirty water disposal. The owners are all actively involved in the running of the farms.
THE UNIT: The unit comprises of a 16:32 DTL herringbone parlour. The dairy facility is tidy, spacious, and in good working order, with investment made to maintain cubicles, parlour, heifer housing and vet/AI facilities. More recently the investment has been in auto foot bathing and Cow Manager Activity system to aid heat detection. The silage clamps/feeding area complete the facilities and provide a good working environment containing both cows and all heifer replacements.
THE DAIRY HERD: Approximately 350 crossbred cows block calved over 10 weeks from the end of August. Yields are around 7000 litres/cow, and the focus of production is margin/litre and overall profit. Support is available on this well staffed farm. Once calving and serving are over, the focus is on production from forage/grazing and as time with the herd permits, maintenance and improvements on the unit.
ACCOMMODATION: An attractive 3-bedroom semi-detached cottage is available, it is very near the unit, in a pleasant spot on the farm grounds. The cottage is free from rent, rates and the farmer pays for the council tax.
REMUNERATION: Subject to negotiation, this is a well-paid position depending on age and experience.
TIME OFF: 90 days off per contract year.
