Lead Learning Support Assistant
- 18 hours per week, Mon-Wed, Term Time (39 weeks)
- £12,860 per year (Full time Equivalent £31,290)

Job Description : Purpose of the Job
The Lead Learning Support Assistant will support learners with communication, social, emotional, physical or sensory needs to access learning and make progress. Working closely with tutors and the Senior SEND Tutor, the postholder will identify learner needs, communicate effective strategies, support adaptive teaching and plan and deliver targeted interventions. Education, Health and Care Plan outcomes, learner aspirations and specialist advice will inform personalised support to help learners achieve positive outcomes. The role does not include line-management responsibility.
Main Duties
- To provide tailored support for learners with SEND to ensure access to learning.
- To establish positive, constructive relationships and respond to individual needs.
- To promote inclusion, independence, confidence and self-esteem.
- To encourage positive behaviour using agreed strategies.
- To identify learner strengths, barriers to learning and emerging support needs.
- To communicate learner needs and effective support strategies clearly to tutors and the wider team.
- To assist tutors with lesson preparation, delivery and adaptation of learning materials.
- To contribute to adaptive teaching strategies that improve access, engagement and progress.
- To plan and deliver targeted 1:1 and small-group interventions.
- To monitor learner progress, record observations and evaluate the impact of support and interventions.
- To implement EHCP outcomes and contribute to personalised learning and behaviour-support plans.
- To use ICT to support learning and develop learner independence.
- To prepare and maintain equipment and learning resources.
- To support literacy, numeracy, communication, life and employability skills across the curriculum.
- To work collaboratively with tutors, progression staff, the Director of Education and external professionals.
- To occasionally deliver planned learning activities or provide short-term lesson cover under the guidance of teaching staff.
- To uphold safeguarding, health and safety and data-protection requirements.
- To supervise learners during social times, trips and enrichment activities.
- To contribute positively to the ethos, values and wider life of the Training Centre.
Other Duties
- To comply with safe working practices outlined in Bromley Mencap policies and take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of others.
- To report accidents, incidents or near misses as soon as reasonably practicable.
- To comply with GDPR requirements and report any breaches promptly.
- To be aware of and follow Bromley Mencap policies at all times.
- To take part in progress and performance reviews.
- To cooperate with other departments to achieve positive outcomes for members.
- To attend required training and complete relevant online training modules.
- To take responsibility for your own professional development.
- To undertake other duties reasonably within the scope of the role or necessary for the smooth running of the centre.

Person Specification
Essential
- Good literacy, numeracy and communication skills.
- Level 2 English or Maths
- Experience of supporting young people or adults with SEND.
- Ability to build positive and supportive relationships with learners.
- Ability to identify individual needs and barriers to learning.
- Understanding of adaptive teaching and inclusive practice.
- Ability to communicate learner needs and effective strategies clearly to colleagues.
- Experience or ability to plan and deliver targeted interventions.
- Ability to monitor progress, record observations and provide accurate feedback.
- Ability to work collaboratively with tutors and other professionals.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative when required.
- Confidence using ICT to support learning.
- Patience, empathy, resilience and a commitment to inclusion.
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities in education settings.
- Willingness and ability to deliver planned learning activities and occasionally cover lessons
- A Level 3 Qualification in a relevant area of study
Desirable
- Experience of working in post-16, Further Education or specialist SEND provision.
- Knowledge of autism, learning disabilities, SEMH and communication needs.
- Experience of supporting learners with Education, Health and Care Plans.
- Experience of implementing advice from Speech and Language Therapists or other professionals.
- Experience supporting English, Maths, independence or employability skills.
- A relevant qualification in learning support, SEND or education
- A level 5 qualification in a relevant area of study
