Bank Cardiothoracic Physiotherapist

Job summary
As a Bank Cardiothoracic Physiotherapist, you will provide a client-centred and evidence-based service to adult inpatients to continue their therapy care on weekdays. Your patients will be referred mainly from ITU, cardiac and surgical wards, however sometimes from the rehab and oncology wards. You will provide assessment and treatment to a caseload of patients with varied and often complex needs such as those living with head and neck cancer. You will have an opportunity to also support the management of orthopaedic inpatients within your scope.

Main duties of the job
What youll do:
  • Be responsible for the physiotherapy management of the patient load assigned to you and to practise as an accountable professional.
  • Practise as an autonomous and accountable professional using reflective practise and clinical reasoning in undertaking specialist assessment in order to provide an individualised treatment programme for each patient.
  • The caseload will consist of patients with varied respiratory and cardiac presentations including those undergoing cardiothoracic or major general surgery, acute and chronic respiratory or cardiac conditions as per consultant referral.
  • Monitor and provide appropriate physiotherapy services to the adult Intensive Care Unit.
  • Manage clinical risk within your caseload at all times and ensure potential clinical risk is effectively communicated and managed.
  • Liaise with nursing staff and assess or deal appropriately with any new admissions not included on your handover list.
  • Provide other weekend colleagues with assistance as your caseload and clinical competence allow

Accountable to: Therapy Manager

Role Summary:
You are a highly skilled Physiotherapist able to undertake all aspects of your clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner. You will provide a client-centred and evidence-based service to adult inpatients to continue their therapy care on weekends and bank holidays. Your patients will be referred mainly from ITU, cardiac and surgical wards, however sometimes from the rehab and oncology wards.
You will provide assessment and treatment to a caseload of patients with varied and often complex needs such as those living with head and neck cancer.
You will have an opportunity to also support the management of orthopaedic inpatients within your scope.
This role is primarily to cover our weekend service, but you will also have an opportunity to cover weekday shifts and on-call during staff absences and busy times.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical
  • To be responsible for the Physiotherapy management of the patient load assigned to you. To practise as an autonomous and accountable professional using reflective practise and clinical reasoning in undertaking specialist assessment in order to provide an individualised treatment programme for each patient. Caseload will consist of patients with varied respiratory and cardiac presentations including those undergoing cardiothoracic, complex head and neck and major general surgery, acute and chronic respiratory or cardiac conditions as per consultant referral.
  • To monitor and provide appropriate Physiotherapy services to the adult Intensive Care Unit.
  • To provide colleagues with assistance in other clinical areas within your scope (e.g. orthopaedics) as required.
  • To obtain informed, valid consent from patients. This includes education to support ongoing management.
  • To comply with confidentiality policies as set out by CH, HCPC and the CSP.
  • To respect a patients right to be chaperoned and appropriately implement the Hospital chaperone policy.
  • To accept accountability for your clinical and non-clinical actions.
  • To maintain accurate, comprehensive and timely patient treatment records. To also record reasons if a patient was not seen.
  • To manage clinical risk within your caseload and ensure potential clinical risk is effectively communicated and managed.
  • To promote dignity, privacy and safety with particular consideration of the patients cultural, spiritual and personal needs and preferences.
  • To liaise with nursing staff and assess or deal appropriately with any new admissions not included on your handover list.
  • To liaise with the Physiotherapist on-call regarding any concerns and potential issues by contacting the therapist directly.
  • To feedback regarding patients status and any variation of treatment on the relevant notes.
  • Should there be any concern regarding a patient, or any issues related to the weekend work, to contact the regular therapist or bank coordinator after the weekend by telephone.
  • To maintain the highest standards of professional expertise and efficiency.
  • To assist all senior staff with their duties and responsibilities as appropriate for your role.
Training
  • To familiarise yourself with the Hospital and departmental policies and procedures as appropriate. These will be covered in your induction.
  • To provide evidence of compliance with mandatory training requirements.
  • To be aware of the safety regulations pertaining to departmental equipment that you intend to use, and to be competent in their use.
  • To keep abreast of current development in Physiotherapy and specifically your speciality.
  • To be aware of current legal and regulatory issues affecting your practise.
  • To follow and maintain safe manual and patient handling principles and policies.
  • To complete risk assessments prior to any clinical activity where there is a risk involved and to document these thoroughly.
Administration
  • To ensure compliance with company charging policies for the Therapy Department and to be responsible for the completion of thorough and accurate charging documentation.
  • To become familiar with the departments and equipment relevant to your work.
  • To provide good professional relationships with the hospital staff, consultant users, patients and visitors.
  • To be aware of and promote Therapy services within the hospital through your conduct.
  • To be aware of and comply with company requirements on presentation and general behaviour.
  • To aid and implement Hospital safety and security procedures and to apply these to all aspects of your work.
  • To be aware of the health and safety regulations pertaining to the equipment within the Therapy department.
  • To be responsible for initiating discussions with the Therapy Manager and other senior staff about any concerns or situations that prevents you from meeting your job description requirements.

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that he/she maintains the integrity and quality of both computerised and manual data.

Health Clearance

TRAINING, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE
Essential: Proven broad experience in the field of cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy including acute respiratory, critical care, general surgery and general medical caseloads. Good knowledge of head and neck surgeries, precautions and inpatient recovery. Specialist knowledge appropriate to your area of experience. On-call experience. Sound clinical reasoning skills. Commitment to multi-disciplinary teamwork. Evidence of CPD. Record of mandatory training. Good computer skills. Knowledge of health and safety issues in a hospital and therapy setting. UK healthcare experience. Knowledge of specialist devices appropriate to respiratory care.
Desirable: Experience in managing post-surgical orthopaedic patients. Experience in fitting equipment if appropriate e.g., crutches, walking aids. Previous experience in private healthcare setting
