Help Young People with SEND Reach Their Full Potential

We are looking for an experienced and compassionate Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a welcoming specialist SEND provision in Woolton, Liverpool.

Supporting secondary-aged pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) , moderate to severe learning difficulties, and a range of communication and social-emotional needs, you'll become an integral part of a dedicated team committed to helping every learner thrive.

The school provides a structured, nurturing, and inclusive environment where pupils are encouraged to build confidence, develop independence, and achieve meaningful academic and personal outcomes. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled HLTA who is passionate about inclusive education and making a lasting difference.

The Role

Working closely with teachers and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will:

  • Deliver planned learning activities to individuals, small groups, and whole classes under the guidance of teaching staff
  • Provide whole-class cover when required, ensuring continuity of learning and maintaining a positive classroom environment
  • Support personalised learning programmes aligned with pupils' Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
  • Deliver targeted interventions focusing on literacy, numeracy, communication, social skills, emotional regulation, and preparation for adulthood
  • Support pupils with autism, learning difficulties, sensory needs, and associated behavioural challenges using consistent, positive, and inclusive approaches
  • Implement a range of communication strategies, including visual supports, Social Stories, PECS, Makaton, and AAC systems where appropriate
  • Monitor, assess, and record pupil progress, providing feedback to teaching staff and contributing to review meetings and annual reviews
  • Promote positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and independence through restorative and trauma-informed approaches
  • Support pupils during vocational learning, enrichment activities, educational visits, and life skills sessions
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENDCOs, therapists, pastoral teams, families, and external agencies to ensure a consistent and holistic approach to support
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where every pupil can succeed
About You

We're looking for someone who:

  • Holds HLTA status or a relevant Level 4 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or an equivalent qualification)
  • Has recent experience supporting children or young people with SEND, particularly autism and learning difficulties
  • Is confident leading learning activities and managing groups of secondary-aged pupils independently
  • Has a strong understanding of autism-friendly practice, inclusive education, and effective behaviour support strategies
  • Demonstrates excellent communication, organisation, and relationship-building skills
  • Is patient, adaptable, resilient, and committed to achieving positive outcomes for every learner
  • Has the right to work in the UK and is available to work full-time
Desirable Experience

Applications are particularly welcomed from candidates with:

  • Experience within specialist SEND schools, resource provisions, or alternative provision settings
  • Knowledge of EHCP processes and preparation for adulthood pathways
  • Training in PECS, Makaton, AAC, Team Teach, MAPA, or other positive behaviour support approaches
  • Experience supporting pupils with sensory processing needs, SEMH, or complex communication difficulties
  • First Aid or safeguarding qualifications
What We Offer

Joining us means you'll benefit from:

  • Competitive daily rates of pay based on experience and qualifications
  • Access to high-quality CPD, SEND-specific training, and safeguarding updates
  • Ongoing support from a dedicated education consultant
  • Opportunities for long-term placements and permanent positions within specialist education settings
  • A rewarding role where you can make a genuine difference in the lives of young people every day
Safeguarding and Compliance

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and we expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

All appointments are subject to an Enhanced DBS check (Child and Adult Workforce), satisfactory references, and full compliance with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE 2026) guidance and safer recruitment procedures. Overseas police checks may also be required where applicable.
