The role

At SSE, safety is our number one value. We live by our licence: if it's not safe, we don't do it. We focus on ensuring that we have no injuries or major environmental incidents, and that people are healthy and happy at work. Reporting to the Regional Health and Safety Manager, you'll provide proactive and pragmatic occupational health and safety guidance to various stakeholders throughout SSEN Transmission.

You will

  • Support effective risk mitigation by raising awareness, promoting practical occupational safety understanding, and helping colleagues manage everyday workplace health and safety risks through proportionate, consistently applied controls.
  • Provide proactive, pragmatic SHW and CDM advice, engagement and guidance to Transmission Onshore Capital Delivery project teams and supporting directorates, helping them meet UK health and safety legislation, internal procedures and construction-phase requirements.
  • Assist those appointed as Client, Principal Designer and Designer to comply with CDM and Safe Systems of Work procedures, while supporting safe, healthy ways of working across SSEN Transmission projects and sites.
  • Complete assurance activities, support effective incident reporting and management, monitor health and safety performance, and contribute to continuous improvement focused on positive outcomes and a healthy, happy and safe workplace.
  • Develop trusted stakeholder relationships, promote our Safety Licence — if it’s not safe, we don’t do it — and contribute to the development, improvement and application of the Transmission SHW Management System through collaboration, training and information sharing across SSEN Transmission and SSE Group.

You have

  • A graduate qualification in Occupational Safety (e.g. NEBOSH Diploma) with proven experience in safety and risk management. Membership of IOSH (or equivalent organisation) is also preferred.
  • Professional stakeholder management skills to ensure cross-business collaboration and the ability to build a high-performing, commercially focused and customer-focused safety culture.
  • Detailed knowledge of qualitative and quantitative risk assessment techniques, including demonstrable experience in the application of ALARP.
  • Excellent communication skills with a natural ability for building and maintaining relationships with all stakeholder levels.
  • Experience in applying SHW requirements and CDM Regulations across construction projects, preferably during the construction phase and across multiple projects.
  • A full UK driving licence with the flexibility to travel to our various SSEN sites and projects.

About SSE

SSE’s purpose is to be restless every day until we make electricity clean, affordable and available for all.

We do this by developing, building, operating and investing in electricity infrastructure and businesses needed in the energy transition. This includes electricity transmission and distribution networks, onshore and offshore wind farms, hydro-electric power and flexible thermal generation. We also provide products and services for businesses and other customers.

Our investment plan will see SSE invest £33bn in critical electricity infrastructure to 2030.

SSEN Transmission own and operate the electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland. We transport electricity from where it is generated to where it is needed, ensuring a safe and reliable electricity supply for the communities we serve. But that's not all – we're upgrading the grid to deliver cleaner, homegrown power for the future and building the infrastructure needed for a cleaner electricity system to create secure power for generations to come.
