Job Title: SALARIED GENERAL PRACTITIONER
Reports To: The Partners (Clinically)
The Practice MANAGER (Administratively)
Hours: 6 sessions a week minimum
Annual leave: 6 times your number of weekly sessions
Study leave: Up to your weekly number of sessions

Job summary
To work as an autonomous practitioner, responsible for the provision of medical services to the practice population, delivering an excellent standard of clinical care. Furthermore, the post-holder will adhere to the GMC standards for good medical practice, contributing to the effective management of the practice, leading by example, maintaining a positive, collaborative working relationship with the multidisciplinary team.

About us

We are a GP Training and Medical Student teaching practice in East Ham, Newham, looking after over 13,000 patients from very diverse backgrounds. Our work is also diverse. We pride ourselves on providing high quality services and we are keen on learning and developing new ways of working. We are part of the biggest Primary Care Network (PCN) in Newham and our CQC rating GOOD.

As one of the larger practices in Newham we have 5 GP Partners, 2 Clinical Pharmacists, 1 Nurse, 3 Health Care Assistants and 2 Pharmacy Technicians. We have a named health visitor, a district nurse team and a midwife attached to the practice. We also host PCN staff.

The clinical team is supported by the Practice Manager, a team of 8 Receptionists supervised by a Reception Lead, 6 secretaries/admin supervised by a Senior Secretary, a Medical Records Clerk, 2 Administrators and a Facilities Manager plus Apprentices.

We have a PMS contract to deliver services to our patients and aim to achieve the higher standards and targets in the Quality and Outcomes Framework as well as local targets.

We are in very pleasant purpose built practice owned premises. Our communication and remote working is facilitated by our computer network, and we use EMIS web for our clinical system.

Clinical responsibilities
  • Using our GP E-consult online system to consult with patients and arrange face to face appointments with yourself according to need. This includes housebound patients and or their carers where the face to face appointment could be with yourself or may need to be arranged with an extended team member.
  • Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems
  • Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness
  • Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation
  • In consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health
  • Providing counselling and health education
  • Referring to other care providers as appropriate
  • Prescribing in accordance with the local/practice prescribing formulary (or generically)/national guidelines whenever this is clinically appropriate
  • Issuing only computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions via EPS whenever possible
  • To take part in an on-call duty rota with the rest of the GP team
  • Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes using agreed codes
  • To manage queries, results, paperwork and correspondence in a timely manner
  • Collecting data for audit purposes and contributing to the practice audit programme and clinical standard setting with the practice.
  • To carry out medical reports/examinations e.g. for insurance companies for patients you have been looking after and are best known to you.
  • In general, the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.
Other responsibilities within the organisation
Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety, equality and diversity etc

Confidentiality
You will have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential and may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

Also participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development

Collaborative Working
All staff are to recognise the significance of collaborative working. Teamwork is essential in multidisciplinary environments. Effective communication is essential and all staff must ensure they communicate in a manner which enables the sharing of information in an appropriate manner.

Service Delivery
Staff must adhere to the information contained with practice policies and regional directives, ensuring protocols are adhered to at all times. Staff will be given detailed information during the induction process regarding policy and procedure.

Security
The security of the practice is the responsibility of all personnel. Staff must ensure they remain vigilant at all times and report any suspicious activity immediately to their line manager. Under no circumstances are staff to share the codes for the door locks to anyone and are to ensure that restricted areas remain effectively secured.

General
You will need to have a flexible approach to new developments as general practice is changing. From time to time we will need to review our ways of working to optimise efficiency and workload management.
