Site Manager - High-Achieving Secondary Academy in...
Start Date: September 2026
Contract: Full-time, Permanent (Year-Round Framework)
Salary: Paid to scale (Support Staff Framework)
The Role
A premier, high-achieving Secondary Academy in Newcastle upon Tyne is seeking a professional, highly analytical, and exceptionally organised Site Manager to take operational responsibility for the school’s physical infrastructure, estate management, and health and safety compliance. This is a critical leadership role within the school's support team, perfectly suited for an experienced estates professional or facilities manager who excels at managing large-scale assets, coordinating contractor networks, and ensuring a safe, premium environment for students and staff in the North East.
The successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day maintenance, security, and strategic development of the school buildings, extensive playing fields, and high-tech facility blocks. Key responsibilities include managing the premises team (including caretakers and cleaning staff), implementing a comprehensive planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedule, and running routine safety testing logs (including fire alarms, emergency lighting, legionella flushing, and lift compliance). Additionally, you will oversee the building management systems (BMS), monitor energy consumption parameters, and manage external contractors during large-scale refurbishment projects.
You will act as the principal advisor to the School Business Manager and Principal on all matters relating to health and safety (Health and Safety at Work Act framework) and statutory building compliance. Absolute professionalism, calm problem-solving capabilities, and crisp communication skills are vital, as you will balance reactive maintenance emergencies with long-term capital expenditure tracking and detailed compliance documentation.
School Information
This is an 11 to 18 well-established Academy in Newcastle with an outstanding track record for academic progress, technical innovation, and student welfare. The school features state-of-the-art classroom blocks, high-spec sports hubs, and modern administrative facilities, serving an ambitious regional community.
The estate is meticulously maintained, and the premises team is treated as a highly valued, core pillar of the wider school faculty. Staff benefit from an open, collaborative professional culture, visible and supportive senior leadership, a realistic budget for estate upkeep, and funded pathways for continuous professional training and safety certifications (including IOSH, NEBOSH, or specialized statutory testing courses).
Requirements
Proven experience in facilities management, estate coordination, or a senior site manager role, preferably within an educational or large public-sector setting
Deep working knowledge of current health and safety legislation, COSHH regulations, and statutory building compliance frameworks (IOSH or NEBOSH qualifications are highly desirable)
Strong IT and data management capabilities, with confidence utilizing digital facilities helpdesk tracking platforms and building compliance software
Professional, objective, and proactive approach to team leadership and contractor management
Trade background (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry) or a strong building maintenance skill set is highly advantageous
