Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 14 years of experience in technical writing, journalism, or editorial management
• Experience managing an editorial desk or overseeing a team of writers to deliver content on deadline.
• Experience translating scientific or technical concepts into accessible narratives for audiences.
• Experience in copy-editing, proofreading, and maintaining house style guidelines.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience navigating ambiguous, matrixed environments while effectively prioritising simultaneous initiatives and projects.
• Deep understanding and interest in artificial general intelligence and its potential for broader societal impacts.
• Familiarity with academic citation standards and fact-checking processes.
• Demonstrated ability to build trust and collaborate seamlessly with subject matter experts, researchers, and executive leadership.
• Track record of establishing and enforcing editorial standards and tone-of-voice guidelines for a new publication or think tank.

This is an opportunity to join an outstanding team at the forefront of AI research and development. We’re seeking an exceptional editorial leader and writer to serve as the driving behind the DeepMind Institute's (DMI) publishing desk. This role plays a crucial part in translating frontier AI research into accessible, narratives, setting the intellectual benchmark and overarching tone for the Institute’s voice.

This role involves a unique dual mandate: crafting compelling, flagship content as a executive technical writer, while simultaneously providing editorial mentorship to a team of writers and researchers. Partnering directly with the Managing Director, you will shape complex arguments, unblock intellectual hurdles, and ensure the seamless execution of our publication roadmap.

You will collaborate closely with teams across the organisation, including operations, communications, subject matter experts, and executive leadership. Navigating a changing, matrixed environment, you will act as the ultimate quality-assurance gatekeeper, ensuring our groundbreaking discoveries are evidenced, flawlessly presented, and brought to life for a variety of critical audiences.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

US: $220,000 - $305,000 (USD) + 25% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities

• Act an executive technical writer, taking ownership of drafting complex, flagship DMI publications to set the benchmark for the Institute's voice.
• Provide direct editorial guidance to the writing team, shaping arguments and unblocking intellectual hurdles to realise publication priorities on complex AGI related topics.
• Own the final copy-editing, fact-checking, and proofreading process, acting as the strict gatekeeper for house style, accessibility, and grammatical standards.
• Manage the formatting, citation checks, and technical upload of content into the CMS as the final checkpoint before publication.
• Coordinate with operations and communications partners to ensure content meets strict feedback SLAs and is accurately prepared for promotional channels.
