About The Role

A key element of the newly launched DfE Experts at Hand offer, advisory teachers provide advice, training and support in schools and educational settings so that staff develop inclusive practice and can support children and young people with special needs. 

The role of Advisory Teacher is to offer advice, training and support in schools and educational settings so that staff develop inclusive practice and can support children and young people with special educational needs to meet their potential and achieve good outcomes. As an advisory teacher, you will work directly with schools and settings supporting children and young people to ensure that they can access and take part in teaching and learning activities with their peers as independently as possible and work towards achieving their aspirations. 

Gloucestershire STEPS (Specialist Teaching and Educational Psychology Service) is highly ambitious for all children and young people and is well-regarded by schools and families across the county. We are looking to recruit additional advisory teachers to join our teams based in Cheltenham, Forest of Dean, Gloucester and Stroud. A valid driving licence and access to a car for countywide travel will also be essential in this peripatetic role. 

This recruitment campaign includes one permanent position plus additional two-year fixed-term roles. Unless you indicate otherwise in your application, you will be considered for both opportunities. About you

You are a qualified teacher with extensive experience of delivering whole-school strategies and support for children and young people with additional needs. You need to be a strong communicator and a proactive problem-solver with the skills to work collaboratively with colleagues and fellow professionals, with the confidence to offer constructive challenge and support. Strong interpersonal skills are therefore crucial. 

With high expectations for all children and young people, you are passionate about inclusion and understand the need to share and embed evidence-based approaches that improve provision and outcomes for children with SEN. Experience of teaching across more than one age phase is an advantage, as are any additional SEN-related qualifications.  

You will understand the Gloucestershire Graduated Pathway and SEN processes and will have a keen interest in the forthcoming national SEN reforms. You will be strongly committed to safeguarding, equality, and your own continuous professional development.

About us

STEPS (Specialist Teacher and Educational Psychology Service) offer advice, training and support in schools and educational settings so that staff develop inclusive practice and can support children and young people with special educational needs to meet their potential and achieve good outcomes. 

We have bases across Gloucestershire. The Advisory Teaching Service offers support for children with a range of special educational needs. We also have a team who support children and young people with physical disabilities, vision, hearing and multi-sensory impairments. The Advisory Teachers work collaboratively with the Educational Psychology service.
