About the role:
The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for delivering a high-quality electrical maintenance service across the University. This includes carrying out both reactive and planned preventive maintenance (PPM), ensuring statutory compliance, identifying and resolving faults, and supporting the ongoing development of the maintenance function through training and real-time reporting systems.
The role will ensure completion of all mandated Health & Safety training, including eLearning modules, within required timeframes to maintain compliance with statutory and organisational standards.

About the role:
The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for delivering a high-quality electrical maintenance service across the University. This includes carrying out both reactive and planned preventive maintenance (PPM), ensuring statutory compliance, identifying and resolving faults, and supporting the ongoing development of the maintenance function through training and real-time reporting systems.
The role will ensure completion of all mandated Health & Safety training, including eLearning modules, within required timeframes to maintain compliance with statutory and organisational standards.
- Carry out planned preventive maintenance (PPM) on a wide range of mechanical systems, including HVAC systems, boilers, pumps, ventilation ( AHU,FCU,CB) hot and cold-water systems, and plumbing installations.
- Respond promptly to reactive maintenance tasks, troubleshooting and resolving mechanical faults to maintain safe and efficient operation of university buildings.
- Undertake minor mechanical installations and modifications in accordance with relevant standards and specifications.
- Ensure efficient operation of plant rooms, mechanical infrastructure, and associated systems through routine inspection and servicing.
- Ensure all mechanical maintenance and repair work complies with relevant statutory regulations and industry standards (e.g. pressure systems, water hygiene, gas safety where applicable).
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and statutory compliance checks using the university's CAFM (Computer-Aided Facilities Management) app.
- Support water hygiene management, including temperature monitoring and flushing, in line with L8 / Legionella control procedures as well as carry out water hygiene risk assessment remedials.
- Participate in audits and compliance reviews as needed.
- Accurately document work carried out in real time using digital reporting tools or mobile devices.
- Communicate effectively with contractors and team members to coordinate maintenance activities.
- Provide feedback on recurring issues or inefficiencies to help improve service delivery and system performance.
- Undertake ongoing technical training and statutory certification to maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices and legal requirements.
- Attend toolbox talks, health & safety briefings, and compliance training sessions.
- To undertake training and qualify as Authorised/Responsible/Competent Persons as required.
- Support apprentices or junior engineers with knowledge-sharing and mentorship where appropriate.
- Form part of the dedicated-on call engineering team with scheduled / rota on call weeks. Required to be available for seven days to take calls, attend site when required to investigate and deal with reported issues. Unresolved issues need to be escalated to duty manager as and when required.

About you:
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Recognised mechanical qualifications (e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering / Building Services / Plumbing & Heating or equivalent)
- Knowledge of mechanical systems such as HVAC, hot and cold water systems, pumps, air handling units, FCU and chilled beams supported by strong fault-finding skills
- Good understanding of health and safety requirements and statutory compliance in building maintenance
- Experience in a mechanical maintenance role, preferably in a large or complex estate environment
- IT literate - Use of iPad / SharePoint / Emails / MS Teams / CAFM reporting
- Good knowledge and understanding of building services systems and safe working practices (inclusive of electrical systems)
- Legionella awareness and water hygiene training (HSG274 / L8)
Desirable criteria
- Experience working in an education, healthcare or public sector environment
- Understanding of energy efficiency or BMS (Building Management System) operation
- Steam / Pressure Systems Authorised Person and/or maintain and operation of steam plant
- C&G's Level 2 Award in FGas and ODS regulations: Category I (2079-11)
- Level 2 Diploma in Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems
