Who We Are
At Network Rail, we're the publicly owned operator of Britain's rail infrastructure.
We're trusted custodians of one of our nation's most critical public assets: Scotland's Railway.
We keep Scotland moving - connecting people and places, supporting businesses, public services and communities - driving economic, social and environmental success.
Our work spans almost 20% of the UK network and between 2024 and 2029, we're investing £4.8 billion to enhance our stations and routes, supporting new passenger and freight rolling stock.
Working together with train operators, our investment will mean a more reliable, climate resilient railway; a better customer experience; and greener, more sustainable travel that links cities, towns, urban and rural communities with each other and with the wider UK.
But it's our people who make this progress possible. At Network Rail Scotland, you'll find an inclusive, supportive and flexible working culture where your ideas are valued, your growth is encouraged, and your impact is real. Join us.
This is your railway - and it's moving forward. For more information about Network Rail click here.
About The Role
As Route Crime Manager, you will lead Network Rail Scotland's efforts to reduce route crime (including trespass, vandalism, anti-social behaviour, theft and level crossing misuse), and to prevent and reduce incidents involving suicides, concerns for welfare and trespass on our railway network. Working with a wide range of key stakeholders and partners, including British Transport Police, train operators, local authorities and community organisations, you will develop and deliver strategies that prevent harm, improve safety and support reliable railway operations.
You will use data, intelligence and risk information to identify emerging issues and hotspot locations, and co-ordinate targeted interventions and mitigation measures (with other business units within Network Rail and/or BTP and other agencies) including the production of robust and quantifiable performance improvement plans. The role involves leading governance forums, developing and delivering action plans, delivering regional strategy, maintaining the route-wide risk picture, and providing assurance to senior leaders on progress and performance.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about safety, partnership working and problem solving. You will play a key role in protecting people, reducing operational disruption and helping to deliver Network Rail's commitment to Everyone Home Safe Every Day .
Here are some of the duties your role will include: -
- Implement improvement schemes relating to all 'External' delay categories in line with the regional route crime reduction strategy.
- Influence and co-ordinate route teams, other functions, Train and Freight Operating Companies, British Transport Police, local government and other key stakeholders to deliver improvement in external delay categories.
- Liaise and build relationships with all key internal and external industry partners to develop an overview of performance improvement activities and measure the effects of these schemes, providing advice on priorities as necessary.
- Assist and advise the route, including stations, on the development and deployment and of effective crime reduction plans.
- Provide expert advice on suicide and trespass prevention, providing direction, advice and guidance to rail industry stakeholders to drive continuous improvement in all aspects of suicide prevention and trespass management and facilitate the sharing of information between organisational stakeholders to deliver solutions that prevent, deter and detect suicides and trespass.
- Implement continuous improvement activities relating to incident management and disruption by facilitating incident learning reviews; coordinating lessons identified and helping disseminate these throughout Network Rail. Support external stakeholders in their participation.
- Review response times and processes related to the aftermath of trespass events to improve performance, reduce disruption and related cost.
- Assist in the risk assessment and business risk profile following trespass and suicide events.
- Develop, implement and maintain management information reporting and target setting for Route Crime key performance indicators.
