Investigator
Our investigation team handles Fitness to Practise cases. If a concern passes the initial screening, this team gathers evidence like medical records, CCTV, and statements. They then send a report to case examiners who decide if there is a case to answer. Your role and impact We have exciting opportunities for Investigators to join our Professional Regulation directorate and play a vital role in protecting the public and upholding confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions. This is a challenging, rewarding and meaningful role where no two days are the same. As an Investigator, you will manage and progress complex fitness to practise investigations concerning nurses and midwives, balancing fairness, compassion and public protection. You will gather, analyse and assess evidence to determine whether a nurse or midwife is safe to practise and whether there are risks that need to be addressed. This will involve engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, including nurses, midwives, patients, families, witnesses and representatives, often during difficult and emotionally sensitive circumstances. The role requires resilience, sound judgement and the ability to navigate challenging and sensitive situations professionally. You will regularly work with complex, high-risk and sometimes distressing information, making thoughtful, evidence-based decisions while ensuring people are treated with empathy and respect throughout the process. You will work closely with colleagues and specialist professionals to ensure investigations are progressed effectively and risks are identified and managed appropriately.
You will be an excellent communicator, able to build trust and adapt your style to a range of audiences, including people who may be vulnerable, distressed or experiencing challenging circumstances. You will be comfortable managing complexity, balancing competing priorities and making evidence-based decisions in a fast-paced environment. Above all, you will be resilient, empathetic and committed to delivering a fair, person-centred service that supports the NMC in fulfilling its statutory duty to protect the public. What you'll bring: Experience managing complex, sensitive or high-risk casework or investigations within a regulated, legal or policy-driven environment. Ability to plan, manage and prioritise a varied caseload while meeting deadlines, quality standards and key performance indicators. Ability to analyse complex and high-volume information, identify key risks and make evidence-based decisions. Experience conducting interviews, gathering evidence and producing high-quality written reports or statements. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally and empathetically with a wide range of stakeholders.- Please note that, as part of this recruitment process, you will be required to complete an assessment. Candidates who are successful at this stage will be invited to attend an interview. Interviews will be held on 25 August at 10 George Street, Edinburgh. Please note that this role requires you to review and work with sensitive and distressing material relating to fitness to practise cases and you will be given the appropriate support to deal with this material.
