Maternity Support Worker

Job summary
At present, University Hospitals of North Midlands is unable to offer visa sponsorship for Band 2 to Band 4 roles, as these positions do not meet the minimum salary and skill thresholds required under UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) regulations.

The primary role of a Senior Maternity Support Worker is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the Registered Midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; in order to provide a safe and holistic approach to person-centred care. The Senior Maternity Support Worker should actively contribute to the health and well-being of patients, staff and service users and be able to communicate effectively with sensitivity and compassion. They should be able to work independently within their sphere of nursing while under the supervision of registered midwives. Senior Maternity Support Workers should demonstrate a level of skill and understanding which enables them to undertake specific skills and tasks delegated by the registered midwife and in accordance with relevant procedures, guidelines and policies at UHNM

Main duties of the job
As a Senior Clinical Support Worker you may be required to carry out and perform a range of clinical based skills in conjunction with the above key areas/tasks.These Skills have been pre-mapped and approved by UHNM for this role and will be supported by completion of a robust UHNM competency package that will be accompanied by education packages delivered by both the Care Coach Team and other UHNM educators across the trust who specialise in the training of these specific skills.These skills include:

• Taking Clinical Observations and Recording on Vitals/Paper
• Venepuncture
• Glucose Monitoring
• Pregnancy Testing
• Urine Analysis (Strip)
• Taking Fecal Samples
• Carry out 12 lead ECG
• Observing patients for signs of agitation or distress (Clinical holding/Restraint)
• Wound Observation
• Simple Wound Dressing
• Removal of Peripheral Cannula
• Take Swabs (e.g. MRSA)
• Support and Assist New Staff- Buddy System/Care Certificate Supervisor (Training available via ESR)

Qualifications
Essential

• Educated to GSCE level or Level 2 equivalent, including Maths and English
• Hold a full Care Certificate or NVQ/Equivalent Level 3 Qualification in Health and Social Care/Health- Ofqual accredited ONLY

Desirable

• Experience and/or qualifications in the specific area

Skills
Essential

• Ability to prioritise workload in response to service need
• Ability to work autonomously and be accountable for own actions
• Ability to work as part of the wider team

Knowledge and Skills
Essential

• Minimum of 12 months care experience
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft office: Word, Excel, access and Power-point
• Evidence of professional development activity undertaken in relevant areas
