Summary

Full roofing apprenticeship specialising in Roof Sheet & Cladding. A full-time position working on a range of projects. If you enjoy working outside and you are not afraid of heights, this could be the stepping stone to a good career in construction. Company Portsmouth based but projects across SE England. Travel is expected.

Wage

£16,224 to £25,775.88, depending on your age

National Minimum Wage

Salary is paid monthly upon the submission of weekly timesheets. A travel bursary of up to a maximum of £25 per week can also be claimed and paid weekly.

Hours

Monday to Friday, 08:00 - 17:00. Apprentice must be prepared to stay away on block release for week blocks in Walsall. You may stay away from home when sites are further away.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The principles of roofing materials, installation and maintenance and how they are applied in routine tasks, to include:

• Assessing structures, removal of existing materials, installing insulation, installing main roof coverings to include composite, standing seam, secret fix, single-skin, fibre cement, and built-up systems, flashings, fixings, fittings and components, ventilation systems and roof lights
• Asbestos awareness 
• How to requisition sheeting and cladding materials

What you'll learn

• Work safely and be aware of key health, safety and welfare issues
• Plan and carry out their work to commercial standards of quality and speed
• Move, handle and store resources, complying with relevant legislation and guidance
• Interpret and follow verbal and written work instructions from trade supervisors and site managers
• Select the required materials and resources to carry out the work
• Set up, check and operate plant and/or equipment
• Install related materials and components to a given specification
• Use, maintain and store hand tools, power tools and associated equipment
• Access, interpret and use drawings and specifications to carry out work
• Carry out a range of job tasks including measuring, marking out, fitting, finishing, positioning and securing
• Install plain tiles, interlocking tiles, natural slates and fibre-cement slates
• Install underlay, battens and related roofing components
• Install pre-formed lead and/or proprietary flashings
• Install dry and wet fixed products to verges, hips, ridge and valleys
• Install insulation and ventilation products for warm and cold roof construction
• Install roof windows and flashing kits
• Clean, dry and prepare surfaces for specified system
• Install vapour control layers to prevent vapour coming through the building to protect insulation
• Install mechanically fixed and/or adhered insulation as required by the given specification
• Install reinforced bitumen, single-ply and liquid applied waterproofing systems
• Terminate waterproofing systems at the perimeter upstands and/or open edges to the given specification
• Maintain and repair flat and/or pitched roofs (in excess of 10 degrees)
• Install perimeter details (edge trims, counter flashings termination bars)
• Work around outlets, pipes, soil and vent fittings, safety systems and roof lights
• Assess suitability of structure to receive cladding materials
• Install built-up, standing seam, secret fix, composite and fibre-cement systems and rainwater goods
• Maintain, repair and over-sheet existing roofs
• Install flashings, vents, fittings and components as appropriate to the specification.
• Work around penetrations and upstands

Training schedule

• You will be working to achieve the new Roofing Standard ST0270 at level 2. 80% of the training will take place on various construction sites working with qualified tradespeople
• The other 20% will be off-the-job training based on weekly blocks at Juniper Training College. (Accommodation, breakfast, and evening meals provided)
• You will also undertake training for working at heights, power tools and the correct use of mechanical access equipment such as cherry pickers
• Sites will vary and will mainly be in the London and surrounding areas

More training information

• This a block release course usually once a month so you must be prepared to stay away from home
• You will be informed what training will take place every week so you are prepared and if you require to improve your maths and English this will also be taught during these block weeks

GCSE in:

English Language and Mathematics (grade 4 to 9)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

Working at heights, manual lifting of metal sheeting. Working 95% of the time outdoors in all weathers. Be able to work as part of a team and independently. Ability to measure accurately and become competent in the use of various hand and power tools. Neatness and quality of finish important as your work will form the visible part of the building.
