The Role

The Directorate of Forensic Mental Health provides inpatient care in both medium and low secure settings. The service provides a safe, secure and therapeutic environment for patients with a focus on risk assessment and reduction, rehabilitation and discharge planning for the return to the community.

The post holder will have clinical leadership and line management responsibility for a staff team and be accountable for the co-ordination and provision of specialist nursing care and treatment for individuals who have a mental disorder or learning disability who have demonstrated serious offending behaviour or present significant risk to themselves or others. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the organisations objectives, promote team working and ensure safe and effective clinical practice within their area or responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will provide clinical and professional leadership within a multidisciplinary forensic mental health team, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of specialist nursing care for patients with complex mental health needs and associated risks. They will be responsible for coordinating assessments, developing and evaluating care plans, leading robust risk assessment and risk management processes, and promoting recovery-focused, person-centred care. The role includes managing and developing nursing staff through supervision, appraisal and professional development, ensuring compliance with professional standards, legislation, clinical governance requirements and organisational policies. The successful candidate will oversee workforce planning, resource deployment, quality assurance, incident and complaint management, service improvement initiatives and performance monitoring, while maintaining strong partnerships with patients, carers, colleagues and external agencies to support positive outcomes and safe transitions of care.

Essential

• Registered Mental Health Nurse (Level 1 NMC Registration).
• Educated to degree level, RNLD qualification or equivalent experience.
• Completion of an evidence-based psychological therapies or psychological approaches to care programme.
• Specialist knowledge and application of mental health nursing care, including physical healthcare for patients with complex or unstable needs.
• Specialist knowledge of risk assessment and risk management in mental health settings.
• Evidence of active and ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
• Experience of Nurse Line Management Supervision, Clinical Supervision and staff supervision.
• Specialist knowledge of rights-based practice, values-based care and relevant legislative frameworks.
• Evidence of using digital technology, information systems, email and standard software applications.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience leading service improvement and/or practice development initiatives.
• Ability to manage nursing workloads and competing service priorities.
• Ability to motivate, support and lead nursing teams.
• Ability to act as a role model and share advanced clinical knowledge and skills.
• Sound working knowledge of the NMC Code.

Desirable

• Completion of a frontline leadership or management programme.
• Working towards postgraduate-level study or equivalent experience.
• Evidence of meeting the Post Registration Career Development Framework at Level 7 Senior Practitioner or equivalent across:
• Clinical Practice
• Facilitation of Learning
• Applied Leadership
• Research and Development
• Experience of working within an inpatient mental health environment.
