Make a Real Difference – SEN Teaching Assistant in Edgbaston / Harborne

Schools in Edgbaston and Harborne, Birmingham are seeking compassionate, patient, and motivated Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistants (SEN TAs) to support pupils with a variety of learning, communication, and emotional needs.

SEN TAs play a vital role in helping children reach their full potential. You will provide 1:1 or small group support , assist teachers in adapting lessons, and help pupils gain independence, confidence, and social skills. This is a highly rewarding role, where your support can have a direct impact on a child’s education and wellbeing.

About Schools in the Area

Birmingham schools in this area serve a diverse community, including pupils from multiple cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. SEN provision is strong, supporting children with:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN)

Specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, or numeracy challenges

Mainstream schools with SEN departments

Resource bases attached to mainstream schools

SEN TAs are considered integral members of the school team, helping pupils engage with lessons and develop essential life skills.

Your Role as an SEN TA

Providing 1:1 or small group support for pupils with SEN

Supporting pupils in developing social, emotional, and communication skills

Observing, recording, and reporting pupil progress to teachers and SENCOs

Assisting pupils during transitions between activities or classrooms

Assisting pupils with personal care where necessary

You will be a calm, consistent, and encouraging presence, helping pupils navigate both academic and social challenges while fostering confidence and independence.

Birmingham schools value personal qualities as much as experience. Committed to inclusion and equality

Able to build strong relationships with pupils and staff

Experience in SEN or teaching assistance is advantageous but not essential. Care work, youth work, or community roles

Early years or nursery experience

Education, psychology, or child development studies

Parenting or personal experience supporting children with SEN

Full training and mentoring will be provided to help you develop your skills and confidence in the role.

Schools with strong SEN departments and inclusive practices

Opportunities for professional development and career progression

Term-time hours with good work-life balance

Diverse and inclusive school communities

SEN TAs often progress to higher-level support roles, specialist SEN positions, or teaching careers within the city.

Professional Development

Schools provide ongoing CPD including:

Autism and SEMH awareness

Speech, language, and communication support

Career progression pathways in education

This ensures you grow your skills alongside the pupils you support.

Term-time only

Typical school hours: 8:30am–3:30pm

Long-term placements preferred

Supportive environment with clear behaviour and safeguarding policies

While the role can be challenging, it is highly rewarding, with visible impact on pupils’ learning and emotional development.

All SEN TA roles require:

Enhanced DBS clearance

Safeguarding training

Adherence to school policies

Birmingham schools are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

If you are ready to make a real difference in children’s lives, becoming a Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant in Edgbaston / Harborne, Birmingham offers a meaningful opportunity to support pupils, contribute to an inclusive environment, and build a fulfilling career in education.

Your patience, empathy, and dedication will help children thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
