SENCO – Independent School – Bristol
Start Date: As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Paid to scale
School information:
This is an 11–18 well-established Independent Secondary School in Bristol , highly regarded for its inclusive ethos, academic ambition, and strong pastoral foundations. The school prides itself on maintaining exceptionally high standards while ensuring that every student feels valued, understood, and supported. Their environment is calm, well-structured and shaped by consistent expectations, enabling students to flourish both academically and personally. Pupils demonstrate maturity, kindness and a willingness to engage fully in all aspects of school life. Staff benefit from a collaborative culture built on shared values, supportive leadership, and a genuine commitment to professional development.
The school’s SEND provision is integral to its success. Their SEN department is well-resourced, well-respected, and positioned at the heart of the school community. The SENCO works closely with teachers, pastoral teams, external professionals, and parents to ensure that every student receives the tailored support they require.
About the Role:
The school is seeking a skilled, experienced and proactive SENCO to lead on all aspects of SEND provision. This role will suit a strategic thinker with a hands-on approach—someone who can design, monitor and evaluate robust systems of support, while also nurturing positive relationships with students, families and colleagues. You will oversee interventions, EHCP processes, assessments, and ensure high-quality teaching for SEND learners across the school.
You will play a pivotal role in shaping inclusive practice, supporting teaching staff in differentiating effectively, and ensuring all statutory responsibilities are met. You will also work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to evaluate the effectiveness of provision, recommend improvements, and lead whole-school initiatives that enhance SEND outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
• Oversee SEND provision across KS3–KS5, ensuring best practice in identification, assessment, and intervention.
• Lead on EHCP applications, annual reviews, and liaise with external agencies.
• Work collaboratively with teachers to ensure high-quality differentiation and inclusive classroom practice.
• Provide coaching, CPD, and guidance to staff on SEND strategies and behaviour support.
• Manage LSAs and support staff, ensuring consistent expectations and effective deployment.
• Maintain accurate records, provision maps, SEND registers, and documentation.
• Work with pastoral leaders to support vulnerable students, ensuring cohesive provision.
• Communicate sensitively and effectively with parents and carers.
• Evaluate the impact of interventions and refine systems to improve support.
• Ensure compliance with statutory SEND requirements and safeguarding expectations.
Requirements:
• National SENCO Award (or willingness to complete).
• Strong understanding of SEND legislation, EHCP processes and inclusive practice.
• Excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills.
• Experience supporting SEND students within a secondary setting.
• Ability to analyse data, track progress and evaluate provision impact.
• A proactive, compassionate and student-centred approach.
