Construction Teacher (SEMH Provision)
We are seeking a committed and resilient Construction Teacher to join our expanding provision, working with post-16 students with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs .
This is not a traditional teaching role. You will be delivering a practical, hands-on construction curriculum to small groups of learners who may have experienced significant disruption to their education.
You will play a key role in helping students:
Re-engage with learning
Develop practical trade skills
Build confidence and independence
Work towards City & Guilds qualifications (Entry Level 3 – Level 2)
What You’ll Be Doing
Teaching & Learning
Deliver engaging, practical sessions in:
Bricklaying
Carpentry
Plastering
Painting & Decorating
General maintenance
Adapt teaching to meet a wide range of needs
Use hands-on learning to motivate and re-engage students
Curriculum & Assessment
Support the development of a structured, meaningful construction curriculum
Deliver and assess City & Guilds qualifications
Track progress and maintain evidence for verification
Adapt learning based on student progress and needs
Behaviour & Pastoral Support
Build strong, trusting relationships with students
Use calm, consistent approaches to behaviour
Support students to regulate and re-engage
Work closely with safeguarding and pastoral teams
Safeguarding & Safety
Maintain a strong safeguarding focus at all times
Ensure a safe workshop environment, including:
Risk assessments
Safe use of tools and equipment
Model high standards of health and safety
Working as a Team
Direct and support a Teaching Assistant effectively
Contribute to EHCP targets and reviews
Work collaboratively across the provision
What We’re Looking For
Essential
Experience working with young people with SEND/SEMH needs
Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
Practical experience in construction trades
Ability to deliver engaging small group sessions (up to 6 learners)
Confidence working alongside and directing support staff
Desirable
Teaching qualification (QTS or equivalent)
Experience delivering City & Guilds or vocational qualifications
Assessing/IQA qualifications
Understanding of trauma-informed practice
