Health and Safety Consultant

£50k - £55k per annum
Full-time

Health and Safety Consultant

  • Pivotal role, providing Health and Safety advice and expertise

  • Utilise your consulting experience to make an impact

  • Field-based position working from home and visiting clients’ premises across Scotland

About the role

As an NFU Mutual Health and Safety consultant, you’ll belong to a Risk Management Services team that has helped business owners reduce and manage commercial risk for over 30 years.

Health and safety are a key focus of our Risk Management Services function and we’re looking for a skilled Health and Safety Consultant to join the North region. Covering Scotland, the team delivers a tailored health and safety consultancy service, helping customers to comply with legislation, and help prevent accidents for their staff, customers, and the public. You’ll be working across a wide range of industries, including agriculture, forestry, estates, manufacturing, engineering, and other commercial organisations, this an excellent opportunity for you if you thrive on variety.

You’ll establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, other Health and Safety Consultants, and Industry and regulatory bodies. With your expertise and networking ability, you’ll meet your targets to ensure the effective achievement of goals and promotion of NFU Mutual Risk Management Services.

A crucial part of this role is producing clear, professional, and practical reports that help our customers understand their risks and take meaningful action. Following site visits and remote surveys, you’ll produce high quality Health & Safety reports, risk assessments, audits and action plans that accurately capture your findings and provide prioritised, proportionate recommendations.

Your reports will translate complex Health & Safety legislation and risk information into clear, client-driven guidance, setting out what action is required, why it matters, and realistic timescales for improvement. Using defined NFU Mutual systems, templates and frameworks, you’ll ensure all written outputs are to a high standard, within SLA, and meet NFU Mutual’s professional standards.

This is a field-based role, requiring you to work from home to complete administrative tasks and travel to clients across the Scottish region. You’ll mainly be traveling to clients in Perthshire, the Highlands, and surrounding areas. We try and keep our consultants within a 2-3 hour drive from home, but more significant travel will be required on an ad hoc basis across the UK.

This role is known internally as an RMS Health & Safety Consultant.

If you like working with a variety of clients, building relationships and assessing a range of risks, this could be the right opportunity for you.

About you

You’re an experienced and confident Health & Safety professional, ready to make a real difference for our clients. With a strong background in providing consultancy and advice across a breadth of industry sections, you bring detailed technical knowledge of current Health & Safety legislation, risk management, and loss prevention practices. You’ll have a flexible and effective communication style, enabling you to work well with and adapt to a wide range of customers from all walks of life.

You’re self-motivated, target-driven, and used to working towards KPIs, open to learning new information to drive your performance, and the performance of others. Your ability to write high-quality Health & Safety reports and assessments sets you apart. Effective time management and flexibility are second nature to you, and you always put the customer at the heart of what you do.

To join us, you’ll bring:

  • A full UK driver’s licence – essential

  • A broad understanding and awareness of complex risks across numerous industries such as agriculture, farming, construction, manufacturing, etc. – Desirable

  • Relevant, industry recognised qualifications and memberships; Holding CertIOSH – essential, L6 Diploma or chartered status (CMIOSH) – desirable

  • Experience as a Fire Risk or DSEAR assessor - desirable

  • Excellent written communication skills, taking specific care with spelling, punctuation and grammar – essential, and to be assessed at interview

  • A customer-focused approach and strong stakeholder engagement skills

  • The ability to use Microsoft Word to produce a high-standard of work - filling out templates, formatting documents, proof-reading, editing
