Main purpose of the job

    • To carry out the duties of this post in line with the remit outlined in the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document including the conditions of the school's own policy
    • To take responsibility as the SENCO to ensure that SEND provision in the mainstream is efficiently and effectively managed and legal and statutory requirements are met.
    • To work collaboratively with leaders, staff, parents, carers and external agencies and across the federation to develop an inclusive culture where all pupils are valued, supported and enabled to thrive.
    • To carry out teaching duties as required
  • To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school

Duties and responsibilities

Shaping the future

· Contribute to the school's self-evaluation process, including devising and monitoring action plans and other policy development with regard to SEN and inclusion.

· Support the development and implementation of the school's strategic vision for inclusion, ensuring that SEND provision contributes effectively to whole-school improvement priorities.

  • Lead by example especially when implementing change and improvements in standards.
  • Promote a culture of inclusion within the school community where all views are valued and taken account.

Leading teaching and learning

· Be an excellent role model, exemplifying a high standard of teaching and promoting high expectations for all members of the school community.

· Help with the provision of training and support for staff in all areas of inclusion.

· Support teachers in developing adaptive teaching approaches that enable all pupils to access a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum.

· Be responsible, alongside the Assistant Head Teacher, for Inclusion for ensuring that all children requiring specific monitoring are appropriately managed to access the curriculum and make progress enabling them to achieve their IEP targets.

· Promote the active involvement and inclusion of pupils in their learning.

· Monitor the quality of teaching and learning for pupils with SEND and contribute to school improvement planning through robust evaluation and challenge.

Developing self and working with others

  • Promote and protect the health and safety welfare of pupils and staff
  • Be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school
  • Contribute to the school's ethos and vision
  • Support the development of collaborative approaches to learning within the school and beyond
  • Be a good role model for both staff and pupils in terms of being reflective and demonstrating a desire to improve and learn
  • Lead the annual performance management process for identified staff

Managing the organisation

  • Contribute to regular reviews of the school's systems to ensure statutory requirements are being met.

Securing accountability

  • Support the staff and governing body in fulfilling their responsibilities with regard to SEND
  • Contribute to the reporting of the school's performance with regard to SEND

Strengthening community

  • Assist the SLT in developing the policies and practice, which promote inclusion, equality and the extended services that the school offers
  • To maintain contact with all specialist support services.
  • To manage and develop the access of extended services for all SEND children in the mainstream.
  • To attend meetings with parents and carers as appropriate to ensure positive outcomes for all parties.

Specific tasks:

Support the Assistant Head of Inclusion to ensure the SEND policy is implemented consistently and effectively including the following:

  • Ensure that the school's policy is consistently applied throughout the school.
  • Interpret and analyse SEND data and provide summary reports to the AHT, SLT staff and governors.
  • Ensure assessment is completed for all children on your caseload, and that parents/carers, class teachers and all other relevant professionals are informed.
  • Oversee the formal assessment process, which may result in a EHC plan being drawn up and manage the all-review meetings for any children in the mainstream that may require it.
  • Work with Class Teachers to set appropriate targets on their IEPs
  • Assist teachers in the identification of children within SEND, advising them on appropriate strategies
  • Identify groups of pupils and individuals with SEND, who are at risk of underachieving and devise strategies for raising their achievement
  • To monitor the progress of children with SEND and to observe and assess their progress. Join Pupil Progress meetings where appropriate
  • Organise induction for pupils new to the school
  • Arrange and oversee meetings with parents of children in need of SEND support
  • Develop strategies, which enhance the involvement of parents and carers of children SEND in the life of the school
  • Work in partnership with outside agencies and build links with local community groups who work with parents, carers and pupils
  • Keep the school's SEND register and pupil records up to date
  • Organise and chair any SEND meetings
  • Monitor and assist with the referral of children to the various support services and outside agencies and to liaise with them

General

  • Undertake any additional duties reasonably requested by the Executive Head Teacher or Head of School, commensurate with the role.
