Senior Analytical Chemist Job Description Template
Our company is looking for a Senior Analytical Chemist to join our team.
Responsibilities:
- Use innovative approaches to tackle a broad range of complex analytical challenges;

- Write and review technical documents such as SOPs, protocols and reports;
- Continuously critique experimental data, contextualise and communicate to your project team;
- Proactively coach and mentor less experienced colleagues;
- Excellent teamwork to ensure project problems are resolved promptly and accurately;
- Co-ordinate stability studies, approving stability protocols/reports and liaising with clients as required;
- Ensure QC instruments are maintained in a calibrated/validated state, organising external service support promptly as required;
- Interpret and describe analytical results, explaining them to a wider audience;
- Prepare out-of-specification (OOS) and deviation documentation as required;
- Responsible for the management, supervision, guidance and coaching of all laboratory personnel;
- Responsible for review and writing local procedures e.g. Standard Operating Procedures, calibration procedures and in-house test methods;
- Assists in procurement, installation and commissioning of analytical test equipment;
- Responsible for the upkeep of analytical test equipment with respect to calibration, preventative maintenance and repair;
- Carry a mobile phone to provide on call cover for out-of-hours testing if needed.
Requirements:
- Several years of analytical experience, ideally in a chemical or pharmaceutical development environment;
- A minimum of BSc or equivalent (2.1 or above) in a relevant discipline such as analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical;
- The ability to deliver to deadlines and take a proactive approach to problem solving;
- Substantial experience in techniques such as HPLC, GC, UPLC or similar;
- Organisational skills to manage analytical projects, ensuring project timelines are met, communicating scheduling issues to the Team Leader/Supervisor;
- Capability to motivate and train junior colleagues, identifying those who demonstrate high potential for career development;
- Good oral and written communication skills to colleagues and a wider audience;
- An appreciation of quality/regulatory standards and quality systems, in particular the relationship of the MHRA with the pharmaceutical industry;
- Willingness to contribute to new ideas and initiatives;
- Conscientious and meticulous in laboratory and written work;
- Experience in data evaluation using spreadsheet and statistical tools;
- Ability to work with minimum supervision and as part of a team;
- Good time management skills and ability to work to tight deadlines;
- Proven problem-solving abilities;
- Degree or relevant experience in Chemistry.
